Purpose
POSEIDON was designed to detoxify Earth's oceans once the Faro Plague was shut down. Otherwise, nothing is known about the POSEIDON subordinate function: the Alpha in charge of its design is neither seen nor mentioned in any of the data points found by
Aloy Daddario or Sylens.
Results
POSEIDON was for the most part successful in its objective, as evidenced by the purity of fresh water in the region. The presence of Snapmaws are likely connected to this function, as they are the only marine-based machine encountered in the world and they appear in
Elisabet Sobeck's explanation of
GAIA as a facet of the POSEIDON subordinate function.
Unknown Signal
One day, an unknown transmission struck GAIA and turned her subordinate functions, including POSEIDON, into independent AIs set only to their predetermined purpose. This caused the subordinate function
HADES to initiate its purpose of destroying the biosphere. To prevent this, GAIA activated her kill-switch in an attempt to destroy her sub-functions along with herself. However, in response to this, HADES released a virus that unshackled itself along with all the other sub-functions from her. POSEIDON then disappeared for parts unknown.
Like the majority of GAIA's subordinate functions, POSEIDON has no displayed no observable change in behavior upon becoming an independent entity.
