History
AETHER was designed for the purpose of detoxifying Earth's atmosphere, which had been poisoned by the Faro Plague. Little is known about the AETHER subordinate function: neither the name of its Alpha nor the details of this function are known to
Aloy Daddario.
Results
Although little is known about the AETHER program, breathable air in the world indicates AETHER was mostly, or at the very least partially, successful. Stormbirds are likely connected to this function, as they appear in
Elisabet Sobeck's explanation of
GAIA as a facet of the AETHER subfunction.
Unknown Signal
One day, an unknown transmission struck GAIA and turned her subfunctions, including AETHER, into independent AIs set only to their predetermined purpose. This caused the subfunction
HADES to initiate his purpose of destroying the biosphere. To prevent this,
GAIA activated her kill-switch in an attempt to destroy her subfunctions along with herself. However, in response to this, HADES released a virus that unshackled itself along with all the other subfunctions from her. AETHER then disappeared for parts unknown.
Like the majority of GAIA's subordinate functions, AETHER has shown no noticeable change in activity upon becoming an independent entity.
