The Mage King

The Mage King was the traditional title given to the ruler of the Kingdom of Snowborne in the age of the New Kingdoms.

Appointment

Each King would rule for life but the position was not hereditary. Upon their death, a new king would be appointed from the Council of Mages. In order to attain the title, prospective candidates were required to duel to the death in a formal competition until there was only one survivor.   The harsh penalty for failure, had a sobering effect upon any mage who dared to put forward their name and perhaps unsurprisingly enough, as a result, there were multiple occasions when only a single applicant made a claim for the throne and was thus selected unopposed.

Benefits

The Mage King had a suite of luxurious rooms in the main keep of Iceholt, which included the grand bedroom shown in the image at the head of the article. Fires were always kept blazing in these rooms which offered excellent views out into the fortress and over the pathway through the bleak lands beyond to the Axial Tower.

Accoutrements & Equipment

The Snow Wand was a special symbol of authority made by the Mage King Lanald, soon after the construction of the Axial Tower and then passed down to successive kings.

The Snow Wand is capable of affecting the weather, inducing or preventing snow storms with an area of effect of about ten kilometers around the wielder of the Wand. It is rumoured to have had other less obvious and secret powers as well, which only the Mage Kings themselves, who wielded it, fully understood.
