The Charismatic Captain of Old
‘Ole Frisky’ Captain Finster lived and pirated, primarily in O.Sec F, almost two hundred years ago. Finster was known for his legendary charisma and penchant for a good time in every port. Known for his party-loving ways in between his almost as legendary pirating campaigns, Finster was well-known to have a roll with just about anyone whenever he and his crew shored up for an evening or two of relaxation and debauchery.
Over a much longer career as a pirate captain than most, raiding and fighting across the stars and between the dusty and lawless ports of O.Sec F., Captain Finster had firmly cemented his reputation. Not only was he known as a daring and mightily successful pirate captain, but also for the ballooning number of children who came knocking on his door looking for their father. Even back then, his crew and all those around him joked that he was repopulating O.Sec F single-handedly.
And to Finster’s credit, he never turned these children away; he would calmly explain to them what he did and that it wasn’t safe for them to be around. He would always send them away with enough money to support themselves for a while, and he told them that when they were of age, if they still wished, they could join his crew and learn his ways. If he was still alive by then, that is. While not a perfect father figure by any means, quite a flawed one in fact, this was quite a lot more than most pirate captains would be willing to do.
As Finster’s career continued, and he grew more successful and experienced as a space pirate, he became a well-respected captain, an expert tactician, and a loyal confidante to many. He even pounded a rather well-known pirate haven that is still in operation today. However, as Finster aged, he became eager to pass his knowledge on to the next generation of pirates. Including his own biological children if they wished, though he never forced this upon them.
The "numerous progeny" that is joked about widely nowadays isn’t necessarily all about the biological children that Finster potentially sired, though there were many to be sure, but also his vast network of apprentices, protégés, and adopted "family" members he took under his wing, all of whom idolized him. Many of whom would become infamous pirates themselves.
The joke about "half the pirate population" is a half-exaggeration which speaks to his widespread influence and the loyalty he inspired, along with a healthy dose of actual biological offspring scattered across the star lanes. He might have even set up small "trust funds" or caches of loot for his various children, which are still being discovered generations later.
Hidden “Trust Funds”
The rumoured "trust funds" that Captain Finster left were, of course, not formal, legally established ones. No sensible pirate would do something so mundane. Instead, Finster left something a bit more fun and daring for his progeny to find in the coming generations. Hidden stashes and carefully concealed caches of valuable goods, rare artifacts, and untraceable credits. All scattered throughout the territory he used to roam, and some further out just for a challenge.
Finster became more pragmatic as he grew into old age, understanding the ephemeral nature of his life and the dangers his lifestyle posed to his progeny. He meticulously planned many of these hidden reserves, leaving behind coded maps, cryptic riddles, or peculiar trinkets that would only make sense to his intended recipient when they came of age or faced a particular hardship.
Each "trust fund" was tailored, in a sense, to an individual child or protégé, reflecting their potential needs or their unique understanding of Finster's eccentricities. Showing that Finster, despite being a flawed and often absent father-figure, knew every one of his children, biological or not, intimately.
Many of his children would never find these caches, but many pirates both descended and not continue searching, and the ongoing discovery of these scattered inheritances, generations later, fuels the legend of Finster's foresight and his unconventional, yet ultimately supportive, paternal nature.
