Getting started

Overview

Jordy’s running a West Marches Dungeons & Dragons (5th edition) Campaign! It's a character driven style of DnD that has one DM and many players. Players do not necessarily attend every session. This helps with scheduling and accommodates everyone from casual drop-in to play every week types.

How it works

  • There is no set schedule. The players decide when and who will attend the next session. See: Scheduling a Session.
  • Party size can be as little as 2, as big as 5. (Six can work, but it moves slow.)
  • Unless the party is mostly new people, the party picks what part of the map they'd like to explore ahead of time.
  • We will all have a shared world that everyone can affect. There is a common safe zone / headquarters (Deadpoint) that starts off as small town. Perhaps you can help it prosper.
  • To keep things accessible, we're using characters from the official Player's Handbook only
  • Special Technical Rules

Creating your character(s)

  • Create a max Level 2 character using whatever legal method you’d like from the Dnd5e Player’s Handbook. If it’s your very first time or need help, we can make a character on the spot for you. (Max character levels based on Town level.)
  • If you want to use a character from your past, go for it! If they were a higher level we can work out how to incorporate their past learnings.
  • You can have as many characters as you'd like!
  • Your general character backstory can be as sparse or as detailed as you wish. Please share any special or secret details with Jordy. For the keeners, this entire site acts as access to the town's library and newspaper, allowing you to do research in advance: Adventure Logs, World History, General Overview.
  • What is your character’s reason for travelling to The Delta of a Thousand Teeth? Can be anything! If you’re stuck on this, there are some prompts below. You do not have to share this with other characters.

Group communication

We're still playing around with the best way to balance group-wide chatter and not blowing up phones. I'm thinking:
  • Email chain for initial "who's in this week?"
  • WhatsApp for coordination among parties
  • Email subscription / WorldAnvil for shared information

DM style & availability

I will try to keep one day per week open at minimum.

I value having a good laugh and creative storytelling over almost anything else. Goofiness is welcome and we won't be militant about some of the more nuanced rules (e.g. encumbrance, calculating precise nutrition on journeys). I will be strict on maintaining internal world consistency, and try to interpret mechanics and physics as fairly and realistically as possible.

Most DM rolls will be out in the open vs. behind a screen.

Prompts: Why are you here?

  • The Culdarian Economic Exchange has a new project involving the recovery of artifacts from these islands. They are offering good gold and/or access to the Aquan Vorwash (similar to the Coast Guard) for folks who can contribute. Perhaps you saw a poster or heard about this somehow.
  •
  • Similarly, The Airspear Origin Society is interested in the history of this region. Their posters seem to be in all the same spots as the CEE’s, but they’re not promising riches. They’re only promoting adventure and the thrill of discovery.
  •
  • You heard a rumour from a wacky but somewhat unhinged friend in the entertainment industry that there’s a niche opportunity startup on Deadpoint Island. “Double H, find that guy, trust me!” is as specific as it got.
  •
  • These islands are an ideal place to hide. Maybe you’re looking for someone. Maybe you’re the one running.
