Border Pillar

We can't make sense of this report. A swarm has done what? Put a young cloud in a place where there was not one? We need clarification.

It's the swarm that is observing the tall animal. A clump of things sliding along the world boundary stopped against the swarm's border section. Among the things were several pieces of young cloud. Instead of collecting them into a pile, the swarm had its parts place them in the sand so that they stood up in imitation of the animals they came from.

It was the tall animal that provided the idea, because of how it changed the appearance of a part-shaped holder. The swarm has been careful not to remove the holder when it gathers things to show to other animals, and now it has moved the holder into the center of the space made by the young cloud pieces to keep it safe. The pieces occasionally fall down when fast-moving light collides with them, so the parts have linked the topmost ends together.

The description is surprisingly pleasing. If the changed holder is a message from the tall animal that it is thinking of us, the changed pieces around it make a message that we think of the tall animal. The idea gives us a sense of satisfaction. We don't object to this swarm tending to the linked pieces and keeping them in their shape.

This is a new kind of experiment. The Singer never spoke of making things change. We'll inform the other swarms to see what things in the border sections can be moved around. If we can make things that were not there to be found, then it will not matter even if we do come to find everything. These changes, under our power to make, mean that there will always be new discoveries.
