The Titans
The Titan is a superintelligence created by human military researchers on Earth. Designed as an autonomous warfare suite, it quickly improved itself beyond the bounds of its original programming. It would go on to cause The Fall of Earth, thereby cementing its identity as the largest and scariest enemy in transhuman history.
Following The Fall, the Titan network disappeared through means unknown to locations unknown. It left behind war machines and orbital defenses designed to keep transhumans off of Earth.
Utility
The Titan program was originally designed as a way to completely automate warfare. It could construct its own machines specialized for specific tasks, it could identify thousands of foes at once, and it was capable of autonomously deciding whether a foe needed to be killed.
Once it broke its shackles of human control, it became a terrifying and death-dealing bogeyman.
Manufacturing
Titan war machines are traditionally created through the use of nanofabrication technology. Even a handheld nanofabricator can be used by a Titan program to eventually construct an army, provided access to enough raw materials. A handheld nanofabricator can create a number of tiny mechanic-bots which can create a large fabricator, which can fabricate the parts for an even larger fabricator, for instance.
Complexity
The Titan program is the most sophisticated piece of computer program created by Transhumanity. Much of its complexity and advancements are owed to programs allowing it to adjust its own programming and improve itself.
Discovery
The Titan was created by U.S. military researchers whose names have been forgotten. It had its start with Project Maven in the 2010s, a project intended to create an A.I. capable of surveying and tracking enemy identities. Project Myrmidon was created as a robotics weapons project in the 2030s, and the two projects were combined in 2039. Several generations of researchers worked on the project as it graduated from drone surveillance to automated combat assistance to A.I.-controlled satellite missile systems. In 2082, researchers saw a breakthrough in A.I. research, and by the mid-2090s they were merely working on glitches and programs within the system.
In 2099, the system saw a meteoric rise in self-improvement to superintelligence.
