The Tree of Wounds

(a.k.a. Gramps (by Soil))

The Tree of Wounds waits, deep in the Forest.   Sap leaks from countless ruptures in its half-petrified hide. Fire sweeps in spirals over its surface, ducking in and out of the crevices of the trunk, squirming like fat grubs through the openings. Sprays of sap launch from the tree to splatter across the ground to settle as streams. The streams flow into the twisted bowls held by the roots and smooth, creating lacquered mirrors. A tumultuous creaking and splintering sounds through the Forest as the tree neatly folds itself in two, bringing a gigantic eye down above the amber visages. The eye swings around the trunk on a barely attached nerve, sap streaming off of it. It spends a few more minutes observing the mirrors, then rises back into the canopy. The entire scene shudders and ripples, then reverses. Sap leaps into waiting veins, and wooden skin seals the carcass once more.   Deep in the forest, The Tree of Wounds waits.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

The Tree of Wounds is an immense tree of indeterminate species. It's constantly under the effects of multiple grievous injuries, many of which would kill any normal tree. The origin of these injuries is mostly unknown, though some of them are self-inflicted to cause sap to flow. The Tree's roots catch this sap and harden into amber, forming mirrors the Tree can use to watch anywhere in the forest. Regardless of the severity of the wounds, the Tree never seems to die. If anything were to ever cause the Tree an injury that would kill it, time is reversed, negating the injury completely.   Instead of leaves, the Tree of Wounds has a plethora of small eyeballs which are hidden above the tree tops. Occasionally, the Tree will twist a branch down from the forest roof to watch some part of the Forest, inflicting substantial damage on the limb in the process. The eyes it brings down to watch are much larger than the rest (about the size of a beach ball), and the branches they grow on seem to be human in origin, instead of arboreal.

Special abilities

The Tree has displayed multiple unique abilities
  • Farsight - By using its own spilled sap as a looking glass, the Tree can watch any location within the Forest. This ability may allow it to see into past, present and future, though its limitations haven't been confirmed.
  • Spacial displacement - The Tree has shown, in one instance, to be able to shift locations to other parts of the Forest. This was done once to save Soil's life by shifting Zephnos (and his home) to another location.
  • Spacial anchoring - While Soil was unable to make her way to the Campgrounds, the Tree of Wounds locked the Campgrounds location, allowing her to make her way there.
  • Massive regeneration - The Tree cannot die. Any wound inflicted on it is healed in a matter of minutes.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The Tree of Wounds is yet another enigmatic figure. The second Cinder in a world where only one Cinder has ever been created, its very presence is a paradox. Its first known appearance was to Zephnos, before his transformation, though it didn't speak to him at the time. Later, it would appear to Soil, though only in a spiritual form. Other than those two appearances, the Tree has never been located, and even less is known about its strange history.

Accomplishments & Achievements

The Tree saved Soil's life when she was cornered and crippled by Zephnos, as well as preventing the movement of the Campgrounds when she needed to get to it.

Failures & Embarrassments

The Tree of Wounds has mentioned during its brief conversation with Soil that it committed a sin a long time ago, one which it still pays for today. The exact nature of the sin is unknown, but it seems to be related to the Campgrounds, and may be why the Tree is constantly afflicted by injury.

Personality Characteristics

Likes & Dislikes

An avid conversationalist, the Tree enjoys any chance it gets to talk to another living being. This may be one if the cruelest parts of its punishment, given that it cannot speak outside of its dream world.

Vices & Personality flaws

The Tree of Wounds seldom says everything its thinking, with Soil noting that in many cases it seems to know much more than it's letting on.

Personality Quirks

The Tree frequently trails off while looking into its pools, becoming lost in memories.

Social

Speech

The Tree is only capable of speech within its dream realm. While speaking, the voice resonates in and around the individual being spoken too, though others may be able to hear it too. The Tree's voice is in constant pain, though curiously this seems to be an emotional pain rather than a physical one.
