"It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt,
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills,
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter."
JRR Tolkien
The Dark Forest entity is why you should fear the dark. Able to direct the actions of any creature bound by the laws of the Dark Forest, it gives them purpose, direction, power, and ferocity. It upholds the laws of the Dark Forest, and punishes the denizens that don't do the same. It is everywhere. It is malicious intent incarnate. And when it's dark enough, it may even be able to reach out... and strike.
The Dark Forest entity has no name, but has an intent. It hates the light, but understands it needs the Salamander to live. And so, the first Law of the Dark Forest is born:
Do not enter the light of the Campgrounds.
The Dark Forest entity fears that which is not it, and greedily hordes its tools. And so, the second Law of the Dark Forest commences:
Do not attempt to leave the Dark Forest.
The Dark Forest entity cannot harm the light, but it can harm those who would dwell within it. Hatred for the Salamander and the Campgrounds leads it to take the only action left to it, one of pure spite. And so, the third Law of the Dark Forest is decreed:
Kill any human who enters into the Dark Forest before they reach the Campgrounds.
