Ship-to-Ship Combat

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

The following are playstyle rules, designs, and concepts currently under consideration:

  • Spelljammers and their vessels share a consciousness. Hitting them can cause breaks in concentration which may cause reductions in speed, status effects, or other impacts to piloting and navigating the vessel.
  • "A little more Star Wars, a little less Star Trek", with focus on invidivual characters and small ship combat. This particular feature may need to wait until the discovery's and capabilities to make smaller vehicles and turn the SCARAB into a carrier is more apparent.
  • Spelljamming crews know to fire their shots in a volleys. This means that firing crews will try to concentrate firepower on particular locations in order to maximize the impact of each shot. These could be as simple as "Aim for the helm", "Target their Starboard", "We got them on the run, lay waste to their aft!". For volleys such as this, individual hits are rolled seperately, but damage is calculated as a single summation. This allows for targeted strikes to more effectively piece through an opposing ships Damage Resistance. Shots that are taken non-simultaneously (such as fire - move - fire) or shots that target different sections or features cannot benefit from this feature and are calculated as their own, individual volleys for purposes of concentrating fire.  The intention here is to bring a bit more action to the "Star Trek" like elements of ship-to-ship combat, while still allowing individual crew members to actively serve towards resolving the situation.
  • Veteran Spelljamming Crews are more aware of how a particular vessel operates, how the armaments function within Wildspace and the Astral Sea, and how to more effectively utilize the tools at their disposal. Crews with greater veterency will gain additional bonuses to hit with armaments, among other bonuses. To gain those benefits, all beings crewing an armament must be of the same elevated experience level.

PLEASE NOTE: These rules are a work in progress and may be subject to change if it is discovered that either the DM or the Players are not enjoying the system.
