Achaierai

A species of massive birds whose ten-foot-long, stilt-like legs have the strength and resilience of iron.

Basic Information

Anatomy

With adults totalling around thirteen to fifteen feet high, nine to ten feet of which is only their legs, Achererai are fearsome foes, with a long stride and unrivalled running speed, and immense striking distance. The bones of their stilt-like legs are incredibly dense, and are often compared to steel rods.   The achererai's birdlike upper body is supported from the centre by its four legs. Its tailfeathers are broad and stiff, aiding in balance, but its wings are vestigial, and while they assist in balancing as well, are not capable of supporting the creature's weight in flight. With short necks but long, steely beaks, the achererai's pecking bite is almost as fearsome as being stomped by its steely talons.

Genetics and Reproduction

Achererai are egg-laying with clutches of 2-3.

Growth Rate & Stages

An achererai egg is rougly four feet across and five high, and a newborn achererai is already six to seven feet high when standing. They can walk almost immediately upon hatching, and swiftly learn to hunt their own food.

Ecology and Habitats

Achererai thrive on the rocky, chaotic environments of Avalas and Tintibulus. Their long legs allow them to navigate the rugged craters and cracks of the terrain easily, as well as to leap between cubes - distances that nearly make up for their flightless nature.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Achererai are indiscriminate carnivores, eating both live prey and carrion of any size.

Behaviour

Achererai are social creatures, hunting in flocks of 2-8. Highly food-motivated, some societies have attempted to tame them for use pulling vehicles or guarding fortresses, but they are usually more trouble than they're worth.
