Avids

Avids are the general species category covering the many birdlike species of sentient individuals.

Example Subspecies

  • Garran (Eaglekin)
  • Ravenkind (and Tengui)
  • Batfolk
  • Owlkin
  • Ocype (pseudo-hands at the ends of the wings)
  • Saraf

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Like non-sentient birds, Avids are egg-layers. This makes them far more territorial than more mammalian sentient peoples. They require good nesting options during their birthing season in the spring. It influences many of their cultures, given the very specific seasonal requirements.

Avid sub-species do tend to share in the same types of fears and loves that are more common than other sentients. These fears tend to show up shortly after birth and rarely go away throughout their lives.

Growth Rate & Stages

Avids have a very wide range of maturation rates. It is hard to know without knowing the specific sub-species. Most have a hatchling stage of a year or so, then an adolescence of a few years. Their rapid maturation may be due to more genetic memory or spiritual memory of their ancestors. Some Elves and wizards are very interested in this feature of the Avid mind.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Meat, bugs, fruit and vegetables are all common. Avids often raise large insectoid species as part of their animal husbandry.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Most are solitary-ish. They form loose communities instead of close quarters living arrangements. The Ravinkind (including Tengui) and Batfolk are the exception to this. Marriages are often for life, and connection to children is less than in many other societies. The muli-births of egg laying make for many have multiple brothers and sisters of the same age, these are called clutch-mates.

Sound based inflection and body movement for emotion is extremely common and different from the facial expressions of many sentients, which can make communication difficult. As such they tend to either be bombastic and extreme in their vocabulary, or reserved and precise.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Some Avids live in high mountains, others in thatched huts near the ground and others in giant cave systems. They exist in most realms, while not common they are not rare. Some feel kinship with The Touched as avids are often misunderstood by many sentient speicies.
