Matthias Malshek

Lord of Adelaide

"A little tax never hurt anybody." - Matthias Malshek
Matthias Malshek was a Trebai lord and an infamous robber baron who lived in the latter part of the Fourth Era and the beginning of the Fifth Era.

Early Life

Malshek was the firstborn son of Johannes and Bianca of Adelaide, a powerful family that ruled their territory. He was born in 8011, sixteen years old when The Twenty-Year War began.

Wartime Activities

Because Adelaide was one of the most western Trebai provinces, the High Kingdom of Atla Vera at that time granted his family authority to take extra steps to preserve the safety of their people. The most significant of these provisions allowed the Malsheks to impose heavy tolls on roads, and even harass travellers if they refused to pay.   Upon the rising of the Trebai Ascendancy, Malshek's territory had already been lost to invading dwarven armies. However, during the final years of the war when the Trebai and their allies launched massive counterattacks, Malshek regained his land. As his parents had died during the war, Malshek became the sole ruler of the province of Adelaide.

Post-War Activities

Upon the war's conclusion, Matthias realized that his allowance to impose tolls did not technically expire. He gradually began to increase his tolling, and eventually became well-known for his legal banditry. Though his subjects often complained, the government of the Trebai Ascendancy had virtually lost control of Adelaide in the post-wartime chaos. Malshek continued his tolling for several years, using the wealth to rebuild his province, as well as throw lavish parties and purchase luxuries.   Upon the war's conclusion, Matthias married Zina of Reikenauer. Despite this, he kept several concubines of varying genders.
