Welcome to The Contingency

Excerpt from a Welcome Speech given by Overseer-06 at Site-351

"There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!" (Dickens, A Christmas Carol, 1843)

"Our world is replete with the supernatural. Ghosts, cryptids, aliens, angels & demons - all can be rationalized in some way or form to keep ourselves sane. People may or may not believe in the unknown, but that is none of your concern. Your objective is not to convince them. Your objective is to be the bulwark in the dark. You are the ones keeping the dark at bay so that people can go about and live their boring, normal lives. What we do here isn't pretty. People are sent to their deaths. People go insane. People disappear, never to be seen or heard from again. Worse still, sometimes entire existences can be erased or altered. All of this and more in order to save an ungrateful, bloated, and content population. All of them, painfully unaware of what is happening around them. You will never hear a "Thank you" from Jane Doe buying her coffee at Starbucks. You will never get a pat on the back from the Average Joe walking down the street.

  . . .

Apologies, I got off topic there. That happens when you've been here as long as I have. What we do here is important. You will learn to never tell your wife and kids what you do. You will learn to turn your heart to stone. You will learn that, even though Jane Doe and Average Joe don't have a clue that they were almost wiped off the face of the planet by an anomaly, you will never be praised or thanked. You will learn that you don't need that - because we have a duty. Some call it sacred. I just call it necessary. The things you will see here and out in the field will break you. It will break your mind and your spirit. Things that you were told as a child that only exist in movies and fantasy, you will experience first hand.

Steel yourselves and do not give in to the despair. Welcome to The Contingency."
