Hoi Hatsemaru

Hoi Hatsemaru, daimyō of the Hoi Clan, is an older man who has led his clan for more than three decades. He is regarded within the clan as the perfect example of Hoi discipline and restraint: measured in speech, precise in judgment, and deliberate in every action. Though age has slowed him, he remains an imposing figure, broad-shouldered and steady, his posture as unshakable as the mountains he governs. Hatsemaru is best known for his mastery of the yumi, the longbow of the samurai. In his youth he was said to strike birds from the sky at impossible distances, and even now he personally oversees the training of the clan’s archers.   As a commander, Hatsemaru is a strategist rather than a conqueror. He believes the surest victory is the one never fought, and his policies reflect that principle. Under his rule, the fortresses and passes of Rabirimyaku have been strengthened, turning the region into one of the most defensible territories in Maikhohoto. Hatsemaru prefers negotiation and preparation over display or aggression; he studies his opponents patiently, waiting for mistakes rather than forcing them.   Within the council he speaks rarely but decisively. Those who serve under him describe him as fair and exacting, more teacher than tyrant. He expects the same calm and precision from others that he demands of himself. To his people, Hoi Hatsemaru is not only their leader but a living symbol of the clan’s ideals, steady as stone, quiet as snow, and impossible to move once his course is set.
