Society

Mage society in America and the Commonwealth of Magic (the European settlements) differ. Mages are the minority in America and tend to lay low, rarely showing magic or anything that would signify that they’re not human. During the American Revolution, there was a failed attempt at a mage uprising. The magic population dwindled as most fled to the, now, commonwealth afterward. Throughout the world, there is a massive divide between mages and humans that continues to the present.

Structure

In the commonwealth, mage society is structured in a hierarchy. At the top are the noble families, those who have the ability to use ancient and powerful magic with the assistance of relics. Relics are magical artifacts that were given to mages when they arrived on Earth. It is believed these are tools to aid the mages in eventually returning to their home world. There are 6 relics and 5 noble families. From highest to lowest, the families are ranked as follows:
  1. Thorne
  2. Monette
  3. Leclerc
  4. Knight
  5. Donovan
Underneath the nobles, would be other elites, those with some kind of connection to nobles or are high ranking in some other way. Another organization with high regard is the Emris church, a religious sect that follows the teachings of the mage goddess, Genesis, and are very devoted to the advancement of the noble families.     Noble families each are assigned to “rule” over different cities in the commonwealth:
  • Thorne - Eastwynne
  • Monette - Saint-Lanester
  • Leclerc - Lor
  • Knight - Rosenburg
  • Donovan - Velengard
                    - These are not the only cities in the commonwealth but the major ones.                       - There are about 330 million mages on Earth, 70% of the population lives in the                          commonwealth.   Although they are technically considered the rulers of these cities, there is a parliament that handles most citizen affairs.

Conflicts

Not all areas in the commonwealth heavily abide by the hierarchy, the countries of Granmont and Benheim are known to be more lax in structure and culture, especially in regard to mage and human conflicts. They generally live together in peace while in New Creighton, the country Eastwynne is in, the tensions still remain. It doesn’t help that the Emris church is based there and they very much believe in mage superiority, though they don’t show it as much to the public.   It’s not only humans that are affected by the pecking order, but ordinary mages too. The lack of opportunities and discrimination is not as severe, a mage will be picked over a human most of the time but it’s not as if mages don’t still feel animosity towards the ones at the top.   It is a society so focused on power anyone who is deemed weak is easily discarded and brushed to the side.
