about The Outside
The Outside is the term that inhabitants of the fae realm use to refer to the mundane world, the world that exists outside the fae realm. To the humans of the world, or, rather, the mundane folk, the Outside is simply all that there is of the world. Of course, there are those who know the truth of what exists beyond the Veil, but they are few and far between.
The Outside is heavily based on the real world. Scientifically, most everything is "Earth, but a little to the left." The regions of the globe have similar climates and seasons as they do in real life, I borrow from many different real-world countries and cultures, and the moon phases and the stars in the night sky are the same as they are here. There are some natural phenomena that occur as a result of the Veil, and mundane people try in vain to use science to explain them.
A note on terminology:
"Mundane" is to refer to non-magical people, places, and items.
Based in Reality
The Outside is heavily based on the real world, Earth, as we know it. Having my stories based at least somewhat in reality allows me to make reference to historical events, Hozier songs, and Pinterest posts — things which many of my characters would come into contact with if they were real people — without breaking down the magic of fantasy.
"Earth, but a little to the left"
Some might argue that this is lazy world building, but I believe that as creative folks, our best work comes from writing what we know. Beyond that, some of my work toes the line between fantasy and realistic fiction, a feat that would not work if this world didn't function much the same as Earth does.
