Cybernetics, Bionic Augmentation

While cybernetics do aid in helping those crippled and limbless to regain their lives once more, one must wonder if betraying our flesh to metal will cause us to lose ourselves. - Fren Tellen, Cybernetisis
Cybernetics is a common form of bionic modification that can augment an organic body's physical, sensory, or cognitive abilities. Originally designed to help regain the functions of lost body parts, cybernetics has become more of a statement of transhumanism for all who seek metal over flesh. Yet some places strongly oppose the idea of the natural forms that make them alive.

Utility

Types of Cybernetics

Various forms of cybernetics allow individuals to advance in physical and mental capacity, surpassing the limits of natural capabilities in different areas, such as medical needs and self-modification.   Prosthetics: Mechanical limbs will allow for enhanced strength, speed, and endurance to make them superior physically to those without them.   Sensory Enhancements: Augmented sensory organs like vision, hearing, or touch allow individuals to pick up more information about their surroundings much faster to ensure they are the first to react to ongoing events.   Cognitive Implants: Altering the brain with modifications with memory boosters, neural processors, or learning aids will often result in faster information processing that can significantly affect intelligence.   Internal Systems: Replacing internal organs with artificial organs, blood filtration systems, or neural stabilizers can vastly change health and energy output in the body and can permanently change how someone processes pain, breathing, and more.   Weaponized Upgrades: For those who seek to have their bionic to have built-in weapons, defensive shields, or strength enhancers can easily make them more dangerous than they are letting on, become lethal weapons that can cause harm and destruction whenever they feel like it.

Manufacturing

Almost all cybernetics must be well-designed and include wiring, sensors, microchips, and other electronics to function correctly. Various companies have different designs that offer different results and proficiency.

Social Impact

In a highly advanced society, cybernetics are commonplace and being used to end physical and mental disabilities; the same can be said with certain diseases that damage organs or destroy them, as cybernetics can be used to replace and become more efficient than organic tissue ever was. However, some consider cybernetics the next stage in evolution, willingly replacing their natural body parts with synthetic ones to surpass their limitation. This has led to the rise of cybernetics being used for recreational use and for the military to give soldiers an edge on the battlefield. This leads to increased tension between groups that support cybernetics and those that stand against them on whether they should be used. Many that follow regions often consider it sacrilegious for someone to strip themselves of what their creators gave them for a lifeless shell.   Criminals have also been known to illegally modify cybernetics to create hidden weapons, hack systems, or bootlegs to sell on the black market. Even laws have been created to regulate what cybernetics can or cannot be used and how people can access them. As well as persecution and segregation on how much those who become cyborgs are considered living or machines in their society. Some can even suffer psychological issues should they apply too much cybernetics to their body and have breakdowns that could harm others. Not all is bleak; however, much of the opinion on cybernetics is well-received for the many benefits they achieve in jobs and civilian life.
Access & Availability
Most cybernetics are available on public markets.
Complexity
Cybernetics requires a host to be augmented by undergoing extensive surgery to reconnect nerve tissue so that it can act like any other body part. This also requires the brain to fully understand the function of cybernetics so that it can be active at will.

Flesh To Metal

I can tell you this much: getting this new arm helped me get back on track with my life. - Former Amputee
While replacing the warmth of one's natural body with cold metal may seem a bit extreme when it is unnecessary, it offers the idea of becoming more than one is born to be. It offers them the chance to achieve more in their lives than they would generally be given without them, removing the limitations and hardships of not being augmented. Yet, it leaves the question of how far they are willing to go to achieve the desire for power over the very essence of what they are.
