Hunt of the Mind-Killer
General Summary
Dates: June 30 – July 2, 1936
Location: Garberville, California
Player Characters: The Silver Ghost
NPCs: Rena Anders , Swenson Anders , William Kraven
Synopsis
While traveling north from San Francisco, Robert Kane rescues a young woman named Rena Anders from two men who were attempting to kidnap her. He discovers that she was promised to a demon at birth by her father, in return for prosperity. The demon took both Rena’s little fingers at birth as a reminder of the bargain, and was try-ing to claim her now at the age of twenty-five. Later, when the demon returns, The Silver Ghost dispossesses it from its human host body by shattering a diamond that contained the demon’s essence, freeing Rena. Rena, smitten by Robert Kane, offers her service to theSilver Ghost. Rena is both a telepath and aura reader, and has occasional precognitive visions.
Elements of Note
The first appearance of Rena Anders, who becomes the first of the Silver Ghost’s agents (in the tradition of the Shadow and the Avenger, among other pulp heroes who had a network of agents to aid in their battles against evil).
GM’s Comments
I always rather liked this story, and the character of Rena Anders. This story also contains the beginnings of what would evolve into a larger cosmology for the world of the Chamber, in the person of a demon whose essence is contained in a diamond (or a crystal).
