Siphoning - Agriculture

Typically performed by druids and followers of nature-based gods, siphoning magic from fossil sites to enrich the land has been the primary way most settlements have been able to flourish, and indeed why the larger healthier settlements are found near bigger fossil sites. Through the act of siphoning magic to the land, the mineral composition of the earth changes, manipulated to become what is needed for crops to grow in abundance. Native wildlife also flourishes, encouraged by the growth of local vegetation, so meat produce becomes more abundant.

Certain fossil sites, namely those that tend to more nature-esque appearances, seem to release more magic better suited for agricultural purposes, such as the Demeter Fossil deep within the Ashton Forest.

History

Siphoning originated with the Effulgent Fossil, where a group of adventurers first figured out how to extract magic enough to rejuvenate themselves mid-battle to capture the fossil site. In the aftermath of the battle, as the party healed and rested themselves, their druid figured out how to extend that rejuvenation past themselves and into the land. The results were instantaneous, as the earth became rich and planted seeds blossomed with life and fruit. The party settled there, helping passerby's get to where they need to be or find their own roots near the Effulgent Fossil.

Over the decades, children born near the Effulgent Fossil developed base magical skills, likely due to the magic within their diet, with some becoming powerful enough to brave the world as new adventurers and share the siphoning knowledge. Day Veil was born, the first of many settlements to flourish in this way.

As centuries passed, the method of siphoning was further researched and honed according to the needs of the local settlement/city. While each locale has their own ways of engaging in and celebrating the agricultural siphoning, the execution is universal.

Execution

Only druids or followers of nature-based gods are able to manipulate the magic within the fossil to siphon into the land. This occurs by them becoming conduits through which the magic moves and flows, a link between both fossil and the earth. The number of druids and/or acolytes needed is proportional to the size of the region, and roughly a day is needed to properly enrich the land.

Attempting to have more siphoners for a smaller region to accelerate the process have resulted in the land becoming 'burnt', similar to the aftermath of lava flow. Over time, as the lava rock decomposes, the soil does become magically fertile and suitable for agriculture, though the destruction prior to this is enough to deter all regions due to the risk of long periods of ruined crops and land.

Observance

Agricultural siphoning is done dependent on when the region needs its crops and the amount of magic siphoners are able to unleash. In most locations, agricultural siphoning occurs twice yearly due to the persistence of the magic.

Notably, agricultural siphoning within the Ashton Grove takes place over three days instead of the customary one due to the Demeter fossil, unleashing enough magic to last the land for an entire year and in such force that Ashton Grove has become the single most biodiverse location on Caradon.
