Fuzzpals

Is your child the only one on the layer you live on? Do they wish for friends? Do you want to give them something that will entertain them for a long, long time? Look no further, for Small Friends, Co. presents their new product. Here come Fuzzpals! These little critters will accompany your little ones wherever they go, play with them, understand the things they say, and even help them complete simple tasks. Fuzzpals can even interact with each other!   So why are you waiting? Your child's new friend is already waiting for their first meeting.
A new product of Small Friends, Co., Fuzzpals, were created as companions homunculi for the youngest. They are Element-powered automatons that look like plushies and other children's toys with a simple level of intelligence. They possess three modes that change their behavior depending on the situation. There is play mode, task mode, and emergency mode.

Three modes

Play mode is active in most cases. While it is on, a fuzzpal will try to entertain either the child assigned to it, a group of children, or the child closest to it by doing tricks, joining in the games, retrieving thrown items, listening and reacting to what the child says, and accompanying it wherever it goes. The child can stop those activities simply by asking the fuzzpal and can even ask the homunculus to leave it alone. The toy will listen and won't bother the child unless asked or until one of the actions that would change its mode happens.   Task mode activates when fuzzpal and/or the child assigned to it are given a task to accomplish. In that case, the fuzzpal will try its best to execute the order or help the child complete it in any way it can. One needs to remember that the fuzzpals are clumsy, they aren't strong, and they aren't too intelligent, so most complex tasks will be out of their reach. Additionally, there are tasks that fuzzpals will never try to fulfill at all. They can never harm humans or intentionally destroy property. They cannot operate any powered devices. Some of these restrictions turn off once the emergency mode kicks in.   Emergency mode activates when a fuzzpal detects a child in distress, or it detects danger, either a monster, a dangerous human, a hazard, or a child in a potentially dangerous situation. When it kicks in, the first thing the fuzzpal will try to do is to remove the child from the dangerous situation. If that is impossible or it would put the child into more danger, the fuzzpal will try to search out the nearest adult who doesn't seem dangerous and will inform them of the situation. The emergency mode is capable of using more computational power, letting them assess the situation better and consider the outcomes of different actions. Additionally, during this mode, fuzzpal can choose to sacrifice itself to protect the child as long as it won't hinder the further chances of survival for the child (for example, should it sacrifice itself while escorting the child home, while the child doesn't know the path or is far away from any civilization).

Appearance

Fuzzpals come in various shapes and looks, most of them measuring between 10 and 30 centimeters in height and/or length, though it is possible to order one of a customized size that exceeds those limits in either direction. Most of the models of fuzzpals are covered with soft materials, giving them a feel of a stuffed toy, while others might be covered with plastics, wood, or metals. They can resemble animals, characters, both human, fantastical, or animalistic, vehicles, or robots.
Vital functions
Fuzpalls do not require food, sleep, or breathing. They don't grow or reproduce, and only require Elemental power stored within Elemental Crystals to function.
Distribution and price
Fuzzpals have been introduced to most non-isolated settlements where children live. They aren't too expensive compared to most intelligent homunculi, though, depending on the scarcity or abundance of resources in the area, they might be seen as expensive or an unneeded luxury or a cute and fair-priced toy. In well-off families, a child can have a small group to a little swarm of them.
Power source
One small Elemental Crystal filled with a single type of Element is enough to let a fuzzpal function for over a year. Shorter, if emergency mode gets activated for prolonged periods of time. For comparison, should that mode be active the whole time, one Crystal would last only about one month.
Perception
Most of them have some kind of eyes and ears or sensors that let them perceive the surroundings and listen in to the conversations and react to them.
Fuzz swarms
Not long after the first fuzzpals hit the shelves, an unexplainable anomaly was noticed by the customers. While fuzzpals that were active in the shops were interacting with each other, performing complex tricks, and responding to complex tasks, once one or two of them were bought, brought home, and activated, they acted more simply and weren't able to do half as much as they did in the store. Many parents reported those units as flawed, though that didn't happen to those who could afford a larger number of them. Quite a few of them ended up in the trash.   Not long after, the anomaly has been recognized, though the mechanism that makes it happen is still unknown. When more fuzzpals powered by the same Element are in close proximity, they start to become smarter, more complex, both when acting together as a swarm and as a number of individuals. At around one hundred units, they reach their limit, becoming as smart as a six-year-old child. They become smart enough to hide from danger and even change their Elemental Crystals before they run out. And thanks to all the people who threw them out before and after the flaw was detected, there might be some swarms of them running around the The Pit. Luckily, their friendly attitude remains the same, especially when directed towards children.
