The First Shift: The War Between The Heavens and Hells
The Era of Slumber
The Barren is a forever-changing world that goes through many shifts, in reality, physics, metaphysics, geography, and history. These shifts happen all at once after large spans of time, this one, in particular, is considered the First Shift, though it certainly isn't as there were shifts before it that completely reset the world and its history, replacing old gods with the new and even then the possibility of even more shifts before that is incredibly likely. Because the current gods know of a world before this, a world where they came from, they consider this one the second and the last one the first, designating these worlds as the Second Creation and the First Creation respectfully. With the knowledge that this shift is only called the first because it was the first since the Second Creation, we may now begin this legend.
After the gods built the Mortal Realm with the gifts from the first four Primoreals: Frolo, Aqueenus, Pyro, and Gia, after wars between the gods, Primoreals, and each other, after the Mortals claimed their battlegrounds as homes, and after an era of myths and legends came the First Shift. The hells shoved deep into the Abyss at the bottom of the Barren grew hungry for control over its entirety. It started slow, so slow that it was of no concern to the gods. The Hells had reached to the mortal's ears, whispered propositions so desirable that they would betray the gods that protect the home they hold so dear. The gods let the hells toy with the mortals for long enough and finally created a seal over the realms, preventing powerful entities from crossing their borders.
The devils and demons of the hells had to rethink their strategy. If greater entities were not able to travel across realms, the greater would have the need of the lesser to get them through. Lesser devils would sneak into the Mortal Realm and shift their form into that of beautiful angels and the disembodied voices of forgotten gods that the mortals trust with their lives and the lives of their blood. They would twist the views of the mortals, forcing their faith to break and reform into believing the lords and ladies of the Abyss were their gods, their hope, their beacon towards greatness, wealth, power, fulfillment, pleasure, feasts, and rest. Ultimately they tricked the mortals into helping them cross over into the Mortal Realm and continue their advancement in complete control.
The Heavens had finally decided to make their move against the Hells, but they were too late. Their reign had already corrupted more than half of the Mortal Realm, the Heavens were at a great disadvantage. War raged on between the two forces for decades until the gods realized what their power had been doing and the casualties it was creating. The mortals were growing thin in numbers, most corrupted and turned into devils, less joined the forces of the heavens, and the rest murdered in the crossfire. The gods had to do something to preserve the people they gave this realm to and pushed them into caves that went deep under the earth and sealed them, each cave holding a single family. After five generations of mortals lived and died in the caves they realized it would take much longer to purge the evil from their home, and the gods had given them a choice: they may either stay in the caves and be put into a great slumber, a stasis that would last until the war was over or to be taken to another realm and claim a new home. Many families left the Mortal Realm and many others stayed in slumber while the Heavens and Hells shifted the land.
Once the hells were sent back into the Abyss, the gods had more to worry about. Great beings had taken over the Mortal Realm while the gods were fighting and now the Mortal Realm was claimed by an entirely new enemy. The gods couldn't stay in the Mortal Realm to reclaim it, as they had already paid too much attention to it and had been neglecting their other duties and realms. In their stead, they made it the job of the remaining mortals, ones who never entered the caves and had fully dedicated their lives and souls to the gods and their battle. They were to remove the great evils and reawaken the other mortals when their quest was complete. No one knows how long it took them, what ancient and mysterious entities came and gone, but with the last breath of the sole surviving warriors of the gods, they had eventually finished their mission or completed it enough for the mortals to awaken and reclaim their ancestor's homes and kingdoms.
This was the start of the era of the Awakened Generation, the warriors of the gods had not completed their mission and some beings of both demonic and unknown origin were left in the Mortal Realm, and now it is the awakened mortal's duty to protect what was left of their old home.
The Four Primordials
The four Primordials were the firstborn entities of the Second Creation and created the Elemental Realms.

Author's Notes
The "Warriors of the Gods" are better known in the Barren as the Angelic Order of the Purge and by the end of the Great Slumber were much less human than when they first gave their souls to the gods. Its believed that before the sole surviving members died, they had children and gave their care to a group of elves, these children would be the first Anglkin.
