Anita Stargazer

The Stargazer (a.k.a. Anita)

It was then I first saw her, a creature whos skin pigment served as windows into the depths of space, her long floating hair reached out to me like the rays of the sun, and her eyes so enchanting and sorrowful like the hue of a dying star. At that moment, I thought I was viewing the Barren as a whole.
-Edgar Randolph, 36 A.G.
Anita Stargazer is a folk figure who inspires children to be inquisitive but with caution. She is described as having endless curiosity that must always be answered even when it gets her in trouble (which commonly happens). Her tales were first found in an abandoned tower on the southern coasts of Great Eethill as a six-chapter storybook titled "The Tales of the Beautiful Stargazer", each chapter recounting a story of the strange woman and ending with a lesson.

The Tales of the Beautiful Stargazer

The following are brief descriptions of her ten stories and the lessons that are taught with them.

Chapter 1: The Stargazer

This chapter introduced the main character: Anita Stargazer, a being that has bizarre physical features such as stary skin and eyes, and mostly details her likes and dislikes. She likes to explore, learn, find, play, and sing. She dislikes the concept of time, forgetfulness, people, and tolls. This chapter's lesson is simply the joy of curiosity and learning.

Chapter 2: The Violet Rabbit

This chapter follows the Stargazer as she pursues a strange-colored Rabbit she finds to see where it'll go. Throughout the chapter, Anita is warned to stop following the creature as it's leading her to danger. She of course ignores all warnings and continues to follow the rabbit until it goes into its rabbit hole. When the Stargazer peaked inside, a fork stabbed her eye as apparently a fairy had made a deal with the bunny to lure in victims.

Chapter 3: The Flower Bush

The Stargazer travels to the deep woods for the first time in this chapter. Anita finds a beautiful bush covered in flowers. There was nothing she wished to do more than pick one of the flowers, but before her hand came into contact, her father pulled her hand away telling her to not touch the plant. She promises him she wouldn't and waited for him to leave to break it. When she picked the flower, she felt several pricks in her fingers and palm. She dropped the flower upon feeling the pain and blood began to run out of her hand. She bleeds until she faints, which is where the story ends. This chapter is particularly odd as her father never appears or is mentioned in any other story, and neither is the outcome of the bleeding.

Chapter 4: The Sun

One morning, Stargazer could've sworn she saw the sun blinked like an eye. Throughout the day she couldn't get the thought out of her mind and decided to stare at it until it repeated the blink. She did this for many days until her eyes were shriveled grapes in her skull.

Chapter 5: A Stranger's Present

In this chapter, Stargazer finds a present on her doorstep on her birthday. When she opened it, she found another box and a letter. The letter read that the box contained a special surprise for Stargazer and must not be opened until her next birthday. For the first few months, she accepts the task without fuss, but as the year continued the more her guessing drove her mad. A day before her birthday she couldn't wait anymore and opened the box to find a pinkish liquid spewing out as she did. Inside the box was a child, slowly growing to be her child, a gift given by Stargazer's stork friend. Though unrealistic for several obvious reasons, the child dies due to severe underdevelopment and leaves Stargrazer crushed. This chapter contains the most plot holes by far and is the second to the final chapter in the story.

Chapter 6: Imprisonment

In the final chapter of the story, the Stargazer finally achieves her title by peering into distant stars and finding other realms the most fascinating piece of the universe. Traveling outside of her realm had been almost unheard of until she snuck into the court of the Sun Elves. They had a gate to many different realms which she used without their permission. After a few minutes of exploring an entirely new realm, she found something so interesting, so strange that she was willing to spend her entire life learning everything about it. But she was dragged back into her realm in front of the Sun King's Court. The only punishment suitable for her crime was to trap her in her home realm for the rest of eternity, never given the chance to explore anything outside of it ever again.

Story Analysis

This story is incredibly confusing in many ways. The lack of origin, the gory imagery, the lack of character development. The main theories consist of it either being out of order, the author being mentally ill, or the author stealing other stories and inserting their own character into them, claiming them as their own. Though this story was made to warn children about the wonder and dangers of curiosity, it is no longer used to teach children. Regarding the Stargazer's research subject within Chapter 6, the author never actually tells us what it's supposed to be, whether or not this was the lack of creativity or a purposeful device to keep the reader guessing like Alita is unknown.

Edger Randolph's Journal

Edger Randolph is a famed explorer of the Feywilds after accidentally entering it in his late teens. This journal is widely believed to be fiction but the more superstitious truly believe the story to be true and feel sorry for his unfortunate adventures. In one journal entry, Edger details his encounter with a starry woman he believed to be the Stargazer in a tall observatory that overlooked the tree tops of the forest. She was at first kind to him and asked many questions, but when she became bored of him sent him flying outside the observatory.
