Deepworlders

From the Deeps and its islands, the Deepworlders emerged. While surface and island deepworlders usually look fairly humanoid with turquise, scaly skin and visible gills and fins as extensions of their limbs, Deepworlders from further below tend to look more distorted, with tentacles instead of hair (jellyfish- or even octopus-like), somewhat watery/'transparent' skin, sharp teeth, or other uncanny things waiting in the Deep. They can reach from magnificence to total horror.

Residents of land and seas

There are different types of Deepworlders, all originating from down in the Deep, but having changed after building their homes further above.
Islanders are the most human-looking Deepworlders, with only some gills and fins as extensions of their limbs, but nothing too distorted, as they mostly live on the lands other than in the seas.
Midlanders, on the other hand, live in the Deeps, however not very deep down. Their skin is scaly, like that of fish, and their gills and fins are way more visible. Often, their hair resembles jellyfish-tentacles.
And then, there are Deeplanders. Creatures, most people will never get to see in their life, as only a few of them ever see the sun. They often have octopus-like tentacles instead of hair on their head, bright, way-too-colorful eyes, and sharp teeth.

Mark of the Deep

Especially Deeplanders are prone to something called the "Mark of the Deep", a disease that spreads among deep sea creatures, giving them distorted features like too-long fingers, an extra eye or limb, a split tongue, teeth on one's skin, or other uncanny things one can imagine.
There may be something lurking down there in the Deeps...something evil.

Naming Traditions

For Deeplanders and Islanders have often had no contact for many centuries, their naming traditions are severely different; though there still are some similarities between the original Deeplander's language and names and the dialects and variations of the rising communities.   Deeplander names: These names are often harsh, with R being one of the most used characters. Surnames do not exist, for family does not have a high priority in their communities.
  • Ir'aluk, Raetwa, Ka'liz, Quru'na
  • Midlander names: Other than Deeplanders, Midlanders understood the possibilities of the gigantic space in the seas without the imminent corruption of the Mark of the Deep. They Invented surnames as a way of preserving honor within their newfound kingdoms. It usually consists of one's mother's name (marriage is not a concept).
  • Iralan, Raenia, Kalin, Qurunoa
  • example for surnames: Iralan Qurunoa'na ('na as a usual surname ending)
  • Islander names: Though islanders live in smaller communities rather than big kingdoms, they have carried on the tradition of surnames based on the mother's name. However, here, marriages have become a concept and the woman's surname usually changes to her husband's mother's name.
  • Inalu, Naenia, Kale, Danuya
  • example for surnames: Inalu Danuya'ni ('ni as a usual surname ending)
  • Beauty Ideals

Usually, beauty ideals resemble a rather turquise, transparent skin, light hair (or jellyfish-tentacles), and a clean, undistorted body. Even under Deeplanders, highly distorted bodies (through the Mark of the Deep) are seen as repulsive.

    History

The origin of the Deepworlders lies down in the deep sea. While some communities decided to get closer to the sun - their body evolving throughout the generations - others decided to stay in the darkness, finding ways to live with an omniscient, unknown force trying to corrupt them. It took a long time for the rising Deepworlders to fully reach the surface, as they would encounter countless dangers along the way, and their body features only slowly with generations adjusting to the new environment. Not every community actually reached the surface - many found a new home in different levels of the ocean. Islanders - those who reached the surface - are the youngest community of Deepworlders, and the first and often some of the only ones to ever breathe air.
