S-32: Rift Fay

I Encountered S-32 when meeting a Traveler, who claimed to have visited many worlds, crossing continents to reach one Rift after the other. When I inquired how he knew of their locations, he led me back to his cart to show me a birdcage covered in a heavy blanket. He pulled away the cloth to reveal a creature that radiant, I had to protect my eyes against its brilliance. As my sight adjusted, I could make out its butterfly wings, slim body, and head shaped like a flame. “I use her often as a night light,” he said. “However, would I set her free, she’d fly straight for the nearest Rift no matter where in the world. I keep her leashed so she can’t escape my sight as she’s flying. You should see her glow when the Rift is near. She lights up like a kid in a candy store.”     Description S-32 is a species of winged humanoids usually referred to as Fey, whose origins are unknown. They're believed to be a nomadic species known to migrate through the multi-verse, moving from Rift to Rift. They have an innate ability to locate Rifts, similar to how birds can navigate using a biological compass. The appearance is often compared to fay from folklore. If there is a connection between these tales and S-32 is unclear. Their wings are more elastic than a butterfly’s due to a transparent skin-like membrane that can change color depending on blood flow. When at rest, the light tends to be a light pink or purple, and when physically active or distressed red.     Males and females can easily be distinguished from one another. Unlike the dark complexion of the males, the females shine brightly, between 60 and 400 lumens, depending on levels of stress, season, and proximity of Rifts. Males sometimes referred to as gremlins, do have colorful wing membranes, but these colors only become radiant within the proximity of females. This is a rare occurrence, and witnesses have not been able to give a proper description. Some have described it as “reflective like Nacre”. The Males are usually larger, aggressive, and live solitary lifestyles. Individual males can often be found at some distance from females migrating in groups, sometimes accompanied by an Alpha Male. In this situation, the males act very territorially, often terrorizing local animals and humans by causing all manner of mischief, destroying nests, and sabotaging. Would a human comes too close to the females, the Alpha will attack using improvised weapons.
