Magic

Magic is the manipulation of the universe's natural energy, called mana, using a process called casting. People who know how to use magic are most often called mages, but other terms exist. Magic can be manifested and applied in many different ways and doesn't follow strict rules, but common uses of magic classified into spells to make it easier to understand them.   Teaching magic has been equated to teaching someone how to flex a muscle they didn't know they had, but it is possible for all sentient species and, country to ancient beliefs, is not affected by genetics or ancestry.   Using magic exacts a toll on the user. Generally, a mage will experience headaches and body aches after extended casting, with more severe issues like nose bleeds, fainting, or migraines becoming possible with potent or lengthy spells. As the use of magic draws upon the body's natural energy, mages will also experience hunger, dehydration, and calorie loss. It is possible, albeit rare, for a mage to learn how to adjust the kind of energy consumed while casting. This method, called dark magic or void magic, lessens the physical toll of casting, instead placing the burden almost entirely on the mind. Free from the danger of running out of energy, mages using dark magic can cast powerful spells for a longer period of time, but run the risk of becoming hollowed or voidhearted. This condition lessens the afflicted's capacity for empathy and happiness. Due to this, dark magic is best used by either those who are extremely satisfied with life and can withstand the effects or those who are already depressed and have nothing left to lose.   Other special forms of casting exist, such as collective casting (several mages combining their mental strength) and vampiric casting (a mage drawing on someone else's magic).
