When Kěith has to deal with a meeting between his father and King Hamdir Aletank II of the Rimling Hills, he brings his acting bodyguard, Syus Nightingale, with him. Upon being there, they meet Beta William Ravenswood and his son, Ulrick Ravenswood. Ulrick, upon seeing Syus, asks for a moment alone. Syus tries to brush him off as he's on duty.
Later that night, Ulrick comes to Syus' room and finds out that Kěith is talking about marriage and loyalty to the empire. Syus agrees, stating that nothing will get him to leave the empire, not even his soulmate. Ulrick returns to his father and states he wants to leave the Bloody Nightstalkers Pack as he wants to be with his mate. Beta William does not agree to such an act, but Ulrick has made up his mind.
