Eternis Port Refugees

Those who have managed to escape Eternis Port via sneaking aboard a ship leaving, have found themselves branching out into the Universal Cluster with barely the clothes on their backs. These refugees are escaping some of the worst living conditions, where most are slaves or have even sold their own children into slavery to feed themselves and build an exit route. However, they are easy to track with the tracking chips implanted at the base of their neck. Once off Eternis Port, the refugees seek asylum outside the Omega Leporis solar system, where it would harder for officials of Eternis Port to track them.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Stopping corruption is at the heart of all refugees. They see corrupted governments and cities as a weakness and will do what they can to protect the innocents. Loyalty is another important factor. Refugees see enslaved people has allies and help them regardless of their own status.

Skills Learned Over Time

At five years old, children can start light work with cleaning duty. They are forbidden from getting an education, only learning basic tasks from their parents, unless their parents came to Eternis Port with an education. They are tested for their intelligence; a child with a high IQ can find themself getting a better livelihood and moving closer to the outer layer, where they are made to work for the rich.   At thirteen, they start hard labor, working in the mines, fixing ships, calculating data, etc. For some, they use these skills to help them store information. The harder and faster they work, the easier it is to learn new skills and potentially get a pay raise -- usually in the form of coupons for food and water.   By obtaining these skills as a former slave of Eternis Port, a refugee can put their skills to work by obtaining freelance work in one of the many solar systems throughout the Universal Cluster. They can quickly become a shipyard repair-person, a data cruncher, etc., and greatly improve their lifestyle.

Common Taboos

Refugees never trust the rich, royal, or noble. By doing so, they have turned their back on the very reason they escaped in the first place. The rich are always out for themselves, leaving those of a lower status as nothing. A refugee must always remember where they came from and how they rose from the depths to find a better life.   Betraying what they went through is the first stage to their downfall. A refugee who finds themselves able to buy a slave is frowned upon. At this point, they can no longer call themself a refugee.
