Ancient Vampires
Her descendants begged for their ancestor to save their life, only to receive scorn and the hunter's cold steel.
The strength of a vampire is not measured in physical terms, but in time. They harness the omnipresent occult escence around them naturally, strengthening their bodies to unfathomable realms. The eldest of them roamed the world centuries before the first human being came to it. While they barely ever involve themselves in the rest of the world, their mere presence is enough to plunge us miserable creatures in the deepest despair.
The origins of time
It is no secret that pure blood vampires are a whole different species than us. While the lesser breeds are former humans just like you and I, turned to blood sucking creatures by another one of their kind. While they are threats far beyond what a regular soldier could handle, they are immensely lacking compared to their pure blooded equivalent. For a starter, they are much younger. Even if they can live long, they are not quite immortals, and vulnerable to a variety of threats.
Pure bloods are not like that. Their weaknesses are few, and reduce with the age. The first vampires are said to be as old as time itself. They witnessed a prehistoric humanity emerge from the ground, build and destroy many civilisations over the ages. For eons, they have been walking among us, overseeing humanity's growth like a shepherd look after his flock. Or like a gourmet raise his own chickens until they are ripe.
I personnally tend towards the second option. Even if they are not actively hunting humans, they still created the lesser breeds which are undoubtebly hostile towards most. However, their real agenda remains a mystery and their motives are known only to the eldest.
In the shadow of the giant
I happened to be in the presence of one ancient vampire once. It was a horrendous feeling. I did not even get to see her face, yet her aura was so strong the air seemed heavy and our lives meaningless. While I struggled to keep my composure, I saw some hunters and several cultists curl up and writhe like in pain, as their mind succumbed to the pervasive knowledge that their existence was useless, will fade away and be forgotten in a breath.
Of the thirty attendees to the meeting, all leaders of their own groups, and the twenty bodyguards, only eighteen of us possessed the mental fortitude to bear the crushing feeling of despair. All this was caused by the mere existence of one ancient looking at us from above. I am not one to worry for my kin, but I cannot help but to be anxious that one day, another one will awake from their eternal slumber and begin to walk the earth, causing death and desolation in their wake.
