The Slaughter of Souls

What Is It?

The Slaughter of Souls was a horrific occurrence in which angels and demons consumed each other's designated souls, driven initially by curiosity and later fuelled by spite. The once-peaceful realm became a battlefield, where the cries of the vanquished were ignored by the bloodthirsty celestials.

What Happened?

Angels and demons were on friendly terms until the demons became bored of the heavy souls they had to eat. And wanted to see what light souls tasted like. So they took to the skies dividing the two worlds, feasting on every unburdened soul they found.
This led to the angels witnessing a significant decrease in their supply, therefore causing many to starve and perish. In retaliation, the angels dove into the skies and devoured every burdened soul, causing many demons to starve and die. This event was soon infamously named the "Slaughter of Souls".
After centuries of illicit feasting and countless deaths, the gods had had enough. They sent their creations back to their realms and cut off access to the skies, preventing travel between the hellish and heavenly worlds.
Deeply ashamed of their gross misdeeds, the ancient beings went down on their hands and knees, begging their respective god for forgiveness and a second chance. Ameuses, moved by this display, forgave the angels and granted them access to the skies once more. On the other hand, while Zutnebas forgave his creations, he never allowed the demons to enter the skies.

Creation of the Nulls

The vastly different souls devoured by the angels and demons took a major toll on their bodies, morphing, twisting and mutating them until the result no longer resembled an angel or demon. These new beings were called "Nulls."
Horrified by this transformation, their former brethren cast them out. With nowhere to go, the Nulls sought refuge next to the human world, in a place that would soon be known as Limbo. There, these being would spend the rest of their days judging the neutral souls that enter their domain.

From this article, you can take away that historical war writing—especially in a mythic or fantastical context—can be powerful when it treats the conflict as both a literal and symbolic turning point. The Slaughter of Souls condenses its narrative into a tight, impactful arc: the cause (curiosity turning to spite), the escalation (mutual retaliation), the divine intervention, and the long-lasting consequences (political separation, permanent access restrictions, and the birth of a new race). It shows how a war’s legacy can extend beyond politics or territory into biology, culture, and cosmology, making it feel mythic in scope. By focusing less on troop numbers and more on the moral fallout, shame, and irreversible transformations, it demonstrates that wars can be remembered as cultural tragedies rather than just military events, giving them emotional and thematic weight in the historical record.
