Avar-Kiaan-class Cruiser
The Avar-Kiaan-class cruiser was a long-lived mainstay of the Aethi Star Navy's fleet. After its initial commissioning by the Sky-fleet Directorate in AY 278, the original Avar-Kiaan's oddly-shaped particle-beam array shields and almond-shaped primary hull could be seen on the front lines of countless starship battles, and in orbit almost anywhere the Aethi maintained a military presence. Eventually, however, the cruisers were deemed outdated, and all were recalled to shipyards in the core worlds of the Imperium for an extensive refit.
During this class-wide refit, the old drive gravitics and primary weapons hardware was removed, and the sides and aft of the ships' hulls were regrown, forming a new profile compatible with contemporary Aethi starship technologies. Modernized engine systems, reactors, and weapons were installed, along with new, larger grav-locked turrets with vastly superior firepower. The new Avar-Kiaan-class Cruisers also sported smaller internal upgrades including improved sensor arrays, expanded and enhanced crew & passenger accommodations, a rearranged command deck layout, and more.
While it has since been replaced by the newer Avar-Lieth-class Cruiser in its former front-line combat role, the Avar-Kiaan's utility persists as a guardian of lower-risk worlds, as well as a very capable vessel for exploration and diplomacy. Additionally, Aethi Star Navy leadership is currently exploring the potential for spare Avar-Kiaan-class starships to be used as a platform to deploy brand-new FTL inhibition technologies.

Power Generation
Avar-Kiaan-class Cruisers were originally powered by a Vaisaara Heavy Industries Aa522-type linear acceleration fusion array, consisting of around 40 modules. After modernization, they were fitted with the new standard 4M-type Fusion Reactors. A special resonant exchange ring was fitted to the reactor core to tap and condition power from the reactor for legacy systems, which required their own power subgrid.
Propulsion
The original Avar-Kiaan design utilized a pair of coaxial gravitic drive tails for main propulsion. Post refit, the cruiser has four modern-style arc drive tails, which allow for a much higher displacement factor and effective speed, in addition to being significantly more power-efficient. Like most Aethi starships, The Avar-Kiaan uses a fusion-thermal tap reaction control system for rotation and fine maneuvering, with low-powered cold hydrogen auxiliary jets in case of main power failure. It is also equipped with an pair of high-throughput plasma thrusters for efficient low-power course corrections and backup propulsion. These plasma thrusters are of an older design, however they were deemed still sufficient for the ship's needs and thus were not replaced during the course of the refitting process. Thus, a few Avar-Kiaan cruisers sport a newer model of plasma jet also found on the Avar-Lieth, in cases where the thrusters required replacement.
Weapons & Armament
The Avar-Kiaan is equipped with the typical Aethi array of armaments that includes numerous missile tubes, particle-beam hardpoints and hovering particle lance turrets, and several batteries of small plasma helix cannons for point-defense against missiles, spatial mines, and small drones.
Armor and defense
The cruiser is equipped with standard Ariskai shell plating, stabilized onium "black box" bulkheads surrounding critical hardware, and energized reactive hull shielding. Post-refit, these were also augmented by photonic siege shielding to compensate for some areas lacking armor, e.g. around the command deck.

The Avar-Kiaan sports a large auxiliary craft bay embedded in the top of its primary hull. It contains mounting racks for [Transport Pod vehicles, as well as numerous attachment points for various types of larger shuttles and auxiliary craft.
