Haloyl scarf

Haloyl caps are a distinctve form of headgear commonly worn by the general populace of Halumay and Oluz, the two northernmost of the Eleven Cities surrounding the Sea of Jars. They are simple linen scarves, worn tied firmly around the head, keeping the wearer's hair under control. As the custom in both cities, particularly Halumay, is for people to wear their hair long, this has obvious practical benefits, particularly among sailors from these cities, who wear the scarves almost without exception.   As Halumay and Oluz are overwhelmingly populated by the Haloyl people, the scarves are often taken by citizens of other cities as emblematic of Haloyl culture, and particularly indicative of the pride commonly attributed to Haloyl aristocrats. In fact, the aristocrats of these cities are probably the least lkely residents to wear them, being free of the necessity for manual labour which turns long hair into a potential problem. Aristocrafts of the northern cities often wear riibons or metallic threads braided into their hair but typically go bare-headed; it is the less well-off members of their communities who work for a living who have need for what is a fundamentally functional garment.   Haloyl scarves are typically brightly coloured, and certainly never bleached white. Persistent rumour in the southern cities has it that there is some sort of elaborate etiquette or code governing who can wear which colours. Again, this is reading rather too much into a fairly basic practical matter. Those who wear the scarves typically work in environments (or pursuits) which get their clothes dirty or sweaty, a matter which plain white scarves would accentuate. The scarves are therefore typically dyed in bold colours to hide this.
