The Way of the Guiding Light

Divine Origins

The origins of The Way of the Guiding Light trace back to a time before the Shattering, when all elf-kind revered her as the goddess of light and knowledge. In this golden age, her teachings promoted harmony and understanding among the different elven factions. However, as the centuries rolled on and tensions rose, the war between the wood elves and high elves fractured this unity. In the midst of growing strife, many elves began to abandon the teachings of Elthara, seeking solace in other deities that resonated more with their desires for power and conflict.   Amidst this turmoil, the Calari elves emerged as one of the last bastion of Elthara’s followers, holding steadfast to her pacifist ideals. Their commitment to peace and knowledge set them apart from their warring kin, allowing them to thrive spiritually even as other elven factions strayed from the light. The Calari’s unwavering devotion to Elthara has since defined their identity, making them the primary custodians of her teachings in a world increasingly filled with discord and rivalry.

Cosmological Views

The cosmology of the Way of the Guiding Light teaches that Rhalindor, the creator of the fabric of reality, wove the threads that bind all existence together. However, it is Elthara’s light that brings true beauty, meaning, and clarity to the world. Without her radiance, the weave would remain shrouded in darkness, lacking purpose. Elthara’s light is more than just illumination—it is the source of knowledge, peace, and enlightenment, guiding those who seek understanding and harmony in the world.   Followers believe that Elthara’s light extends beyond the physical world, reaching into the realms of the afterlife, where the faithful become part of the stars after death. These stars are seen as eternal symbols of those who have achieved enlightenment, their light serving both as a beacon for the living and a guide for those on their spiritual journey. In this way, Elthara’s influence transcends life itself, a constant presence that leads her followers toward knowledge, wisdom, and inner peace.

Worship

In the Way of the Guiding Light, worship is a deeply intellectual and reflective practice, centered around the pursuit of knowledge and the illumination of the mind. Followers engage in long periods of study, seeking to learn from the world around them, whether through books, nature, or personal experiences. These stints of learning are considered acts of devotion, as they bring one closer to understanding Elthara’s divine light. After a period of study, devotees then enter a time of prayer, where they light candles around themselves in a quiet, meditative space. This act symbolizes inviting Elthara’s light to illuminate their minds and hearts, guiding them toward wisdom and truth.   Central to this practice is the oracle, a chosen individual believed to be a direct conduit of Elthara’s wisdom. The oracle provides insights and guidance to followers, helping them interpret their knowledge and experiences in light of Elthara’s teachings.   A significant event in the religion is the Festival of Illumination, a grand celebration held annually. During this festival, followers gather to honor Elthara through the Ceremony of Elthara’s Enlightenment, where they light lanterns inscribed with their personal prayers, wishes for enlightenment, and reflections on knowledge gained throughout the year. These lanterns are then released into the sky or placed in sacred spaces, each one symbolizing the burning desire for understanding and the seeking of divine guidance. It is believed that the changes in the stars or constellations during this time reflect Elthara’s response to the prayers and offerings of her faithful.   The festival serves as both a communal celebration of knowledge and a time for personal reflection. It is a moment where the faithful come together, share their growth, and reaffirm their commitment to the pursuit of enlightenment through the light of Elthara.

Sects

In Elyndor, followers of Elthara adhere to the original teachings of the Way of the Guiding Light, where the pursuit of knowledge and peace flourishes within a harmonious society. This path emphasizes enlightenment, introspection, and the interconnectedness of all beings.   Conversely, the sects of Elthara among the high elves and wood elves have diverged from these original teachings due to centuries of conflict. These fragmented groups often prioritize knowledge as a tool for power rather than spiritual growth, resulting in a more pragmatic approach to worship. While some elements of the Way of the Guiding Light remain, the focus on pacifism and enlightenment is frequently overshadowed by the harsh realities of their war-torn societies.
