Sorcerer

System for Multi-Classing into Sorcerer

1. Blood Background (Character Background Story)

Sorcerers are typically born with magical potential, often linked to their ancestry or bloodline. The first step in multi-classing into Sorcerer is discovering and embracing this magical lineage. This could involve a specific event in the character’s past that awakens their powers.

How to Complete:

  • The player must create a Blood Background that explains the source of their magical powers. This could include a magical ancestor (e.g., a dragonborn ancestor, fey blood, or infernal heritage), a cursed lineage, or a divine gift. The story should describe the moment when the player first felt or realized their connection to magic.
  • This could be tied to a Quest or Event in the player’s background, where they uncover their ancestral power or a pivotal moment that triggers the awakening of their magic.

Completion Criteria:

  • The player must develop a Bloodline Story, which will inform their magical nature. The character’s bloodline might also offer an in-game benefit, such as the ability to tap into their ancestor's power (e.g., a dragon's breath weapon, fey charm, or infernal spellcasting).

2. Magic Training

Before fully embracing their Sorcerer powers, the player needs some formal or informal training to harness their inherent magical abilities. This training could take place under the mentorship of a wizard, another sorcerer, or through personal trial and error.

How to Complete:

  • The player must undergo Magic Training, which could include:
  • Training with a mentor (e.g., a retired sorcerer, a powerful mage, or a wizard) who teaches the basics of controlling magic, casting spells, and understanding the flow of arcane energy.
  • Finding and learning from magical texts or scrolls that help the character understand the fundamentals of spellcasting.
  • Practicing their magical abilities, possibly in secret, to learn how to control their raw power.

Completion Criteria:

  • The player receives Magic Training, which grants proficiency in Arcana and access to the Sorcerer's Spellcasting ability. This can be done through training sessions or quests related to magic.

3. Magical Conduit

As a Sorcerer, the character needs a conduit through which they can channel their innate magical energy. This could be a physical object or a deeper understanding of their powers. It represents their ability to focus their raw magic into something tangible and controlled.

How to Complete:

  • The player must either discover or craft a Magical Conduit, such as:
  • A magic item (e.g., a wand, a gemstone, or a special staff) that helps focus and amplify their innate power.
  • A ritual or magical meditative practice that helps them learn to control and direct their power (e.g., an ancestral ritual or a meditation involving the bloodline’s source).
  • A magical encounter where they learn to tap into their powers under specific circumstances (e.g., an encounter with a magical entity or a test of their magical abilities).

Completion Criteria:

  • The player must create or discover their Magical Conduit, granting them the ability to focus their innate magic more precisely. This can enhance their spellcasting or provide a unique magical ability linked to their bloodline.

4. Magic Schooling

Formal or informal schooling in magic gives the player deeper knowledge of spellcasting. While Sorcerers are often not trained in the same way as Wizards, they still benefit from some form of structured learning, whether it’s from magical books, tutors, or experiences.

How to Complete:

  • The player must undergo Magic Schooling, which can take the form of:
  • Enrolling in a Magic School, where they are taught the structure of magic, advanced spellcasting techniques, and magical theory.
  • Studying under a powerful Sorcerer or Mage, learning specific spells, magical rituals, or advanced techniques that help control and enhance their natural abilities.
  • Attending a specialized magical gathering or school, such as a cult of the bloodline’s origin, or a magical academy, to learn more advanced concepts in magic.

Completion Criteria:

  • The player gains access to a broader range of spells or Magical Knowledge, and perhaps a special ability tied to their schooling (e.g., access to specific spell lists or magical abilities).

5. Guild Quests

Finally, to cement their path as a Sorcerer, the player must engage in Guild Quests, which can provide real-world experience in using their magical abilities. These quests will test their ability to control their magic and apply it in various situations.

How to Complete:

  • The player must participate in Guild Quests related to magic, such as:
  • Defending a magical artifact from an enemy faction or group, which forces the player to use their magic in combat or defense.
  • Magical Research Quests, where the player uncovers lost or dangerous magical knowledge, testing their understanding of magic.
  • Solving Magical Mysteries, such as uncovering a magical anomaly, curse, or powerful magical being, which requires the player to apply their innate magic to solve the problem.

Completion Criteria:

  • The player must complete a set number of Guild Quests or magical challenges that allow them to apply their magical powers. These quests could involve using their innate magic to solve problems, battle enemies, or uncover magical secrets.

Finalizing the Multi-Classing

Once the player has completed all five milestones, they are fully ready to multi-class into Sorcerer. They gain access to all the core features of the Sorcerer class, including Sorcerer Spellcasting, Sorcerer Points, and the choice of their Sorcerer Subclass (e.g., Draconic Bloodline, Wild Magic, Divine Soul, etc.).

Completion Criteria:

  • The player gains the Sorcerer class and associated features, including:
  • Spellcasting based on Charisma.
  • Access to their Sorcerous Origin (subclass).
  • Sorcerer Points for Metamagic and other special abilities tied to their bloodline.

Bonus System for Extra Depth

To add further depth to the system, you can also offer Bonus Rewards for each milestone:

  • Blood Background: Gain a Bloodline Trait or special ability (e.g., Draconic Ancestry grants fire resistance, Fey Blood grants charm immunity).
  • Magic Training: Unlock Additional Spellcasting Proficiencies or gain a Magical Familiar (e.g., a small elemental or familiar spirit).
