Magister of Light
No-one is sure where this man came from or what his real name is. The first record of his appearance was just after the Shadowfall happened. He arrived at a town which was in the midst of a demon attack. He was entirely clad in silver armor, with only his eyes showing through his helmet. He unsheathed a long, silver sword and with a arcane word the sword erupted in light. The demons recoiled before charging at the newcomer. Non of the villagers that were in attendance saw what happened next due to the blinding brilliance of the blade. When the light died away, however, the man was standing in the middle of a pile of slain demons.
After this initial appearance the Magister, as he called himself, continued to either arrive at towns beleagered with demons or ones that were close to recent activity. He started assembling a small warband of warriors that would follow him from town to town to either fight demons or keep the ones closeby at bay.
It was this warband that was the basis of the Magister starting to ask the villagers for money as he said that to keep them equiped and fed required increased funding.
