Personal history
Vincentius was born the youngest of four children to poor shrimp fishers in southern Langue, and attained to a scholarly disposition young. He was apparently literate by age seven, a trait rare among even the upper classes. He worked as a teenager translating parish bulletins into Languish for the priest, who was Allel.
He was recommended for the clergy by his uncle, Stephan of Tul, when he was just 15. He entered the St. Iones Abbey in 437, and produced innumerable manuscripts (most of which survive to the present). At his uncle's commendation he was made the parish priest of the important St. Viane parish in the free city of Marsal in 449. He became a prominent voice in the city, holding sway over several of its Custodians (who were his parishioners). By the mid 450s he was widely expected to be elected patriarch of the city. He was elected in 461, and though his reign was short (at just eight years), he is nevertheless considered one of the parochial see's greatest patriarchs.
In 465 the Tolimanic Apocalypses destroyed most of the north of Eirene, resulting in millions of refugees and the outbreak of Magus' Revenge. Vincentius' consistent public appearances and insistence that the normal liturgy be observed helped calm the city and is widely credited (by both ancient and contemporary assessments) with have saved the city from much of the turmoil that engulfed Eirene. He died in 469 of Magus' Revenge, contracted during his work comforting the sick, and he was widely acclaimed as a saint throughout Marsal immediately after his death. This widespread veneration was confirmed by the Council of Apannina, whose first session declared "If any man should say that Vincentius, the most excellent Patriarch of Marsal, is not properly a saint, or that he is not Over Heaven, or that he in any manner taught falsehoods of the faith, or that he was not right in all manners of person, let him be anathema."
