Camp Mimic

A camp mimic is a specific variety of mimicry predator that preys almost exclusively on humanoids. Their bodies are constructed very similarly to octopuses, with a large beaked mouth and several tentacles, although the tentacles terminate with many extra sub-tentacles near the ends. They stay underground for much of their lives, burrowing slowly and silently only a few feet below the surface, leaving the soil above undisturbed. Using a sort of sonar sense to analyze the surface, they collect supplies, gear, and anything that might be found at an adventurers campsite. Subsequently they construct a rather convincing rest stop, complete with campfire and adventurer puppets. These puppets are either created with the creatures' sub-tentacles or with the bodies of actual adventurers. Orifices near the ends of the main tentacles can be used similarly to a mouth, allowing the creatures to vaguely mimic the sound of speech. They usually situate their beaks just above the surface at the center of the camp, obscured by the campfire. When unwitting travelers draw too close, the creatures' disguised tentacles ambush the humanoids, erratically bashing them into the ground to stun or kill them before gobbling them up through their exposed beaks.
