Barnacle Mimic

A barnacle mimic is unrelated to the common mimic, as it possesses the unique adaptation to disguise itself as a mass of barnacles on a ship's hull. Attached like this, they have simple lives, drinking the seawater by day and sneaking into the ship stores for food at night. They pose very little direct danger to sailors, as a single sailor can dispatch a barnacle mimic with ease. However, if left to grow unchecked, the barnacle mimic can quickly become hungry enough to completely empty a ship of its food supply in a matter of weeks.

Due to the risk of this unsightly pest, many ship captains demand thorough removal of barnacles before leaving any port. Barnacle mimics cannot swim, so there is no risk of one attaching while the ship is on the ocean, but they frequently cling onto the bottoms of docks.
