Apheri
Apheri is a powdery spice, normally vibrant orange in color, frequently found in Telluscian cuisine.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Apheri is normally sold as a fine powder, similar to flour or cornstarch.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Dry and fine. When mixed with a liquid it easily forms a sauce, with a thickness varying proportional to the amount of liquid mixed in.
Origin & Source
Apheri comes from the apherius plant, a bushy, leafy plant native to the Telluscian region of the Pyrhian Union.
History & Usage
Everyday use
A common staple of Telluscian cuisine, apheri shakers, sauces, and stocks can be found in almost every home. As such an easily available spice with a strong but pleasant flavorful, it's an easy default when throwing something together.
Refinement
The apherius plant grows a series of berry clusters along its branches, about every few inches. Each cluster can have from 20-60 berries, around 5-10mm each. These berries are gathered, aged/dried, and ground into a fine powder. The berries themselves are edible as well, though can be bitter before the drying and aging process.
Manufacturing & Products
Apheri can be used as a seasoning, sprinkling it on food or cooking with food in oil. The most common usage however is to combine it with water or prepared vegetable or meat stock, producing a flavorful stew base, dipping sauce, or curry sauce, depending on the amount of liquid used.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Within Telluscia, apheri can be found fairly cheaply in most grocery or souvenir shops. It is exported and sold at more specialized spice shops in major cities, though hasn't taken off outside of Telluscia as its considered by many to be an "acquired taste".
Storage
Apheri is stored like most dry seasonings, in an air-tight jar, ideally in dry and dark areas. It can become clumpy if exposed to too much moisture or humidity, but can keep almost indefinitely when sealed and dry.
