Sending Stone of Awkwardness

Wondrous Item, Rare (requires attunement)

This enchanted sending stone appears ordinary at first glance but harbors a mischievous charm that creates hilariously awkward communication. It's a favorite of tricksters and chaos-loving mages.

Properties

  1. Standard Sending Stone Ability
  2. The user can speak a 25-word message into the stone, transmitting it to its paired stone. The recipient can reply with their own 25-word message.
  3. Dual Recording Feature
  4. If the user tries to re-record the message (using the same activation attempt), the stone stores both versions and automatically sends both to the recipient. The messages are played back in order, often revealing the user's growing frustration or overcorrection:
  5. Example 1:
  6. First message: "Uh, hi! So, um, we’re in trouble, could you... oh no, wait, that sounded dumb—"
  7. Second message: "Okay! Just forget that! We need help at the tavern, immediately. Sorry. Thanks!"
  8. Example 2:
  9. First message: "Hey, uh, just calling to say hi—wait, that’s weird, I didn’t mean—"
  10. Second message: "Right, it’s serious! Town’s on fire. Uh, sorry for the first part. Call me back. Uh, I mean, respond, I guess?"
  11. Awkward Enhancement
  12. When the user sends a message, the stone occasionally adds:
  13. Background Sounds: Muffled coughing, faint chuckling, or mysterious thumps.
  14. Delays: Slight pauses between words, as if the user is hesitating or rethinking mid-sentence.
  15. Compulsive Filler Words: Adds “uh,” “so,” or “like” to pad out the message awkwardly.
  16. Recipient’s Confusion Effect
  17. There’s a 10% chance the recipient receives the messages out of order, heightening confusion:
  18. Example: They hear the re-recorded second message first, followed by the original attempt.
  19. Automatic Premature Send
  20. If the user hesitates for too long (5 seconds or more), the stone sends the incomplete message, leaving the recipient to decipher half-baked thoughts.

Quirks

  • The stone gives off a faint "tsk-tsk" sound when a second take is attempted, as if judging the sender.
  • After sending, the stone will occasionally replay snippets of the user’s message back at random intervals, as though mocking them.
  • If the user shakes it in frustration, the stone emits a half-hearted “Sorry!” in a disembodied voice.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Functions as a standard sending stone, with added enchantments that:

  • Record and send multiple "takes."
  • Introduce awkward pauses, background noise, or filler words.
  • Prematurely send incomplete messages.
