Creating a Character Sheet
Our game uses the standard D&D 5e rules for character creation and players should follow the Player's Handbook when building their character's sheet.
Books
You may use any of the books on the
Approved Book List for character creation. For a quick reference, please see the
List of Playable Races and
List of Playable Classes available in our game.
Starting Points
Characters are created using the standard 27 point 5e Point Buy system, rather than rolls, in order for there to be a fair and level playing field for new characters. If you need assistance figuring out your points, you can use a
Point Buy Calculator to plan out your buys.
Alignment
We do not use the D&D Alignment system. No race or creature, by default, is considered evil and players can choose non-standard races to play with Storyteller approval. This does not mean that characters are given a license to act evil; it means that players are not required to tailor their roleplay to the standards of the D&D alignment system. Spells such as Protect from Good and Evil or a Paladin's Divine Sense will only detect and protect vs creature type.
Lifestyle
Based upon the character's Background, they can expect a certain
lifestyle (aristocratic, modest, poor, etc). Standard items can be purchased based on the resources available to the character without reducing that character's GP. Characters have the abiltiy to change their lifestyle through choices made during the chronicle.
Equipment & Magical Items
All characters start play with standard items and equipment per the Player's Handbook. For items earned or found during the chronicle, you may choose to give these to another character, however a powerful item may not be able to be attuned or used by a character not of an appropriate level. Storytellers have the final say on if a character can use any specific item.
Character Re-Spec
A free re-spec of any points assigned to a character is allowed within the first few months of character creation. This should be discussed with your assigned Storyteller before making any changes to your sheet.
Leveling Up
Characters gain levels using the Milestone system, with characters earning a new level every other month. The exception to this is the first 3 months of chronicle, where characters gain 1 level per month until reaching Level 3. Characters will earn Milestone levels even if they are not active that month. Review the Level Gains Chart to see the current game max level.
The maximum level any character may be is 20.
Players should follow the rules in the appropriate book for leveling their Class or Multiclassing.
Example
Months 1, 2, and 3 of chronicle characters will earn levels 1, 2 and 3. Month 4, no level will be earned. Month 5, characters will earn level 4. Month 6, no level will be earned; and so on.

New Players
Any new player joining the chronicle after start will bring in their first character at the game's Max Level.
Example
Lily joins the game 7 months after chronicle begins. The max level a character can have at that time is Level 5, so she makes her character at Level 5.
Starting Equipment
Characters of new players that are created after chronicle start can choose additional starting equipment per the table below. Work with your assigned Storyteller to choose the equipment that fits best for your character and our chronicle.
Second Characters
All players are allowed a single additional character after the first year of chronicle. This character begins at the level in the chart above. Players may not have more than two characters.
Conflict of Interest
Second characters must be designed in such a way that they do not interact with your first character. For example, you may not make two noble characters or two cleric characters and they should not have character ties to the same PCs or NPCs as your first character. Second characters may not be in the same scene as your first character. This includes game night; you must choose to play either your first character or your second, but not both.
Leveling Up a Second Character
Secondary characters gain a level at half the rate that primary characters gain levels. See the chart above.
Retiring a Character
A player may choose to retire a character and can bring in a new character at the same level as the retired character, or can level their second character up to the retired character's level. If the player chooses to bring their second character up in level, any levels previously assigned to that character can either stay with the character (leveling them up to the game's Max Level) or can be assigned to a new second character.
If a player wishes to retire both of their current characters (if they have more than one), they may bring in a new character at the game's Max Level.
Example
Retiring with only One Character
Lily has decided to retire Lucille, who is level 8. She brings in a new character at level 8.
Retiring with a Second Character
Greg, from the above example, has decided to retire Roy. He has two choices.
- Create a new character at level 8 with his second character, Harold, remaining at level 4
- Increase Harold up to level 8 and bring in a new second character at level 4
Should Greg wish to, he may also retire both Roy and Harold and bring in a new character at level 8.
