Cassaelia Caeli
Cassaelia Caeli (a.k.a. Cas)
Born in Nale to parents more preoccupied with her brother than her, Cas has led a lonely existence from her first day hatching. She was but a child when her brother became infected with Grey, struggling for years to hang on before finally succumbing.
And so she left home, never wanting to hear of the Grey again. But her patron had other ideas, seeing her worthy of wielding his power and becoming a pawn in eradicating it. Though she resisted at first, Cas has reluctantly agreed to be his vessel, if only to get her familiar off her back.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Not very strong, Cas is somewhat scrawny, though this may be typical for the small-bodied dragonets of her race. This sleek build allows her to move quickly and gracefully.
Body Features
Cas' scales are so deep blue they could be black, but her paler indigo wings/underbelly and sharp white horns provide contrast. Spikes adorn her body and her claws are honed to a point, giving her an uninviting appearance.
In the past, Cas' eyes were light blue, but her patron's negative influence has shifted them to a greyish purple.
Facial Features
Cas is not particularly beautiful, but she would probably look nicer without the permanent scowl affixed to her face.
Identifying Characteristics
Cas can be identified by her distinctive robes and purple eyes that, like all dragonets', glow in the dark. And of course, her signature glare.
Special abilities
"Gifted" with the power of the Grey, Cas has the unique ability to call upon its powers and curse her enemies to ash. Her newly acquired negative energy also granted her shadow breath and other forms of dark magics.
Apparel & Accessories
Cas can usually be found in her long black robes, clasped with a pendant of a star. The symbol means nothing to her; it may represent a figure she doesn't know, or simply be an aesthetic design. In any case, she feels more comfortable under the layers of cloth.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Cas learned early on that she was never meant to be born. Though her parents were not cruel or abusive, they overlooked her, intentionally or not, for her older brother Cephias.
Cephi was intelligent, charismatic, and had a bright future ahead of him, but he always found time for his little sister -- until he travelled to Oxheim and came back sick with the Grey.
From there, Cas' childhood was fractured and she faded into the backdrop in all but Cephias' eyes. Even long after her brother was dead, her parents were too distraught to care for her. She left home the moment she was old enough, venturing into the wilds to make her own path.
That is until the mysterious Grey Patron came to her, declaring her worthy to wield his powers and fight against the forces of the Grey.
Cas wanted nothing to do with this, but through the repeated insistence of her new familiar Slate, and the threat of being turned to ash if she refused, she reluctantly agreed and set out onto a journey she never wanted...
Sexuality
Though Cas is bi, she has never been in a relationship and hardly plans on starting now.
Education
Cas received a standard education, though she usually skipped class to wander the city or spend time with her bedridden brother instead. Despite this, she read plenty on her own, studying the common languages in particular.
Accomplishments & Achievements
- Acquired familiar and magical powers (she does not consider this an accomplishment)
- Met a party of "friends" (also not an accomplishment)
- Successfully hunted down sources of Grey and saved a few people from it
Mental Trauma
The death of her brother and neglect from her parents made for a bad enough childhood, but being forced to confront the Grey again when she just wanted freedom has left her in a state of depression and apathy.
At this point, Cas cares little if she lives or dies, and only agreed to this mission to avoid the same fate that claimed her brother.
Intellectual Characteristics
Cas is highly intelligent, enjoying reading and gathering knowledge about the world when she's motivated to. Spellcasting came easily to her though she'd experimented little with magic before.
Morality & Philosophy
Cas' moral compass is skewed by her apathy. Though she has no desire to act in evil or harm innocents, those who get directly in her way will find she has little sympathy for them.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Cas is motivated by little, even death only providing the slightest of push. She just keeps putting one paw in front of the other because that's all that's left for her to do.
Virtues & Personality perks
- High intelligence, knowledge on a variety of topics and languages
- Potent magical powers
- Cool head in high-stakes situations
Vices & Personality flaws
- Unfriendly, cold, sarcastic personality
- Depression and little care for her own life
- Socially awkward
- Aggressively pessimistic
Social
Contacts & Relations
"Friends"
- Slate: Cas never asked for a cute little butterfly dragon to start following her everywhere she went, but here we are. In fact she finds Slate kind of cute (who wouldn't?) but she would never admit it.
- Vela: At first the two butted heads over her Grey powers, but for now Vela is staying out of her way, and Cas prefers it that way. Cas believes Vela would be better suited for her patron's powers as she seems invested in destroying it, but wouldn't wish it on her.
- Kadoren: As of yet Cas and Kadoren haven't interacted much, but as he's quiet and doesn't get in her way, she has no negative feelings for him. He probably ends up reminding her of her brother later on.
- The Grey Patron: To Cas the Grey Patron is hardly an ally, more a booming voice from above sentencing her to her fate. It's not a stretch to say she unabashedly hates him for turning her life upside down without even asking for her input.
- Kale: Though their questgiver and technically her ally, Cas has little positive feelings for the one responsible for getting her stuck with the other two idiots in her party.
- Thean Lokore: Cas finds the skeletal dragon and his hunt for the Grey both creepy and unsettlingly reminiscent of her patron, which doesn't exactly put him on her good side.
Family Ties
Cas' mother and father were there but detached, usually spending most of their attention and energy on her brother Cephias. She hasn't seen them since she left home and doesn't really care to.
From the start, her brother took care of her in their place. Even after he began decaying from the Grey, he still did his best to be there for her. He is the one person Cas has ever felt love for, but these days consumed by bitterness and depression, she tries not to think of him.
Religious Views
Cas knows the gods are real but turns her back on them, especially the dragonet gods. They were never there for her at her worst times, and are apparently too weak to even stop the Grey. She doesn't go out of her way to blaspheme them, but believers could be offended by her aggression towards them.
Social Aptitude
Cas withdraws from social situations, preferring to stay by herself. This isn't just anti-social behaviour; she actually is rather awkward and doesn't know how to deal with people.
Mannerisms
Generally Cas is cold and withdrawn with closed-off body language and a glare that turns most away. When pressed for interaction, she is blunt and curt, saying little to nothing. Biting sarcasm, as opposed to nothing at all, is actually a sign she's warming up to you.
Hobbies & Pets
Though not exactly a pet, Slate became her familiar the day she received the Grey Patron's powers. Since then, he's been being annoying her and generally getting on her nerves, pressing her repeatedly into hunting down the Grey.
Cas hates her patron and this extends to his messenger as well, but over time she finally begins to develop a soft spot for him.
Speech
Most of the time, Cas refuses to speak to others at all. When she does talk, her short, average, and sometimes vulgar way of speaking rarely betrays her true intelligence.
Wealth & Financial state
Cas' family was moderately well-off, so she was raised in relative comfort. Upon leaving home however, she's adopted a more meager lifestyle. While she's not opposed to a warm bed, her parents' worship of comfort and its gods has led her to scorn the overemphasis of it in dragonet society and prefer roughing it out.

Interludes
Falsday, Second Week of Summer. 1.2.1.05
How do I summarize these past few weeks...?
Instead of taking the nice shortcut that will get us to our goal and get them out of my life as quickly as possible, they wanted to go nearly all the way to Colchester. Whatever. It hardly makes a difference to me what happens. I'm just here for the ride.
So off we went, taking far too many detours. Saved a town from a necromancer, got railroaded down to Colchester since bandits apparently took over the road, nearly got eaten by a giant plant, met a talking tree (???), rescued some bandit kid from his terrible mother who thought running off into the woods and sending her children to mug people was a good idea... Yep, this "adventure" is a mess.
To be honest, there were some nice moments. Telling Slate that the ale was apple juice was a highlight. Though that one kind of backfired on me since now he's completely addicted and won't shut up about booze. On second thought, maybe drugging my tiny butterfly dragon wasn't the nicest thing to do, even for me.
Things went downhill from there. On the way to Colchester, we found... him. I don't want to write his name. I'm afraid even that might summon him.
I don't like him. I certainly don't trust him. But if what he said about the Grey cores is right, then we need him to be able to destroy them. And in return, he'll give us... something. Who knows what this creepy skeleton has access to. I just hope we're not handing over Grey cores to some lich king.
There's just one thing. I don't know if I'm losing my mind, but he called me by my name. And the story he told, of being consumed by the Grey, sounded eerily familiar. Maybe I'm just crazy. He seemed to know who all of us were, after all. Who knows?
I'm just keeping that necklace shoved in my bag at night. I can't sleep wearing it.
Side note. Vela gave me a present. It wasn't much, just that old wayfinder the guy in Wolfpine gave her, but I don't like it. I shouldn't accept anything else from her. I don't want to be in her debt.
I don't know how to feel about her. Maybe I hated her a bit after she "confronted" me in the middle of a necromantic dungeon, but after that got solved it's back to sunshine and stars with her. The weird thing is it doesn't feel entirely fake, but I wish she'd stop being nice to me. It doesn't make any sense. It'd be easier if I could hate her, but I just can't bring myself to.
I'm too tired to hate anything these days... I just wish I could go to sleep.
I'm Surrounded by Idiots
Abesday, First Week of Summer. 1.1.1.05
Where the hell do I start.
When I got on that train, I thought I knew what I was getting into. Find sources of Grey, report them before they spread too far, maybe kill some monsters. Work alone. Or at least as alone as I can get with the insect tailing me around every corner.
I noticed that drake the second we got on the train. I mean, who couldn't? Who wears a suit of armour onto a bloody train? In any case, he apparently made a friend, since Slate later managed to yell loud enough to attract her attention. At least she seemed to get the message and left us alone. I don't even remember what they talked about, I just know it made me want to vomit.
Well, there was our fated meeting of the stars. Turns out I got to Wolfpine too late to stop the Grey from killing a few kids. Before I know it, I have these two idiots tailing me on a quest to clear out the cave or whatever the hell. It's all about standard until we find the dying wizard and locate the source of the Grey in this weird crypt. That aside, it turns out he has a lead to some artifact that could resist the Grey. How bloody convenient. Not really my problem, but Slate wanted to and if he blabs to the big guy in the sky I'll probably get cursed to ash, so guess I'm part of an adventuring party now! Fun.
The grand cast:
Me: I really don't want to be here.
Slate: Annoying bug.
Vela: This unicorn seems to think her pretty hide makes her special. I don't know what her problem is. I realize my powers could be scary, but I didn't need her in my face after I helped save her life from those seekers. In any case, there's more to that sweet little persona than she lets on, that's for sure.
Kadoren: Big red dragon brute. I guess he's blocked a few hits for me, so he's not the worst. He doesn't say much, though.
So we have an irritating insect who never shuts up, an overly aggressive unicorn, and a big old beast who can't speak two words. Guess how much fun I'm having.
Times like this I almost wish I could go home.
