Common Languages

The Evil Empire's official tongue, Common was a language used by halflings and humans in the northern peninsula. Though it has few mortal speakers, its fingerprints can be found in many existing languages of Estier, and elementals of that continent have a tendency to speak the archaic form of Common.

Geographical Distribution

Most inhabitants of Estier speak a language derived from Common, with a few exceptions. Here is a list of languages that are mutually intelligible.
Within the Disjoined Duchies the Marchionese language is spoken near the borders of Alfheim. In the north, the Andusti language is predominant, and on the west coast Unicovan is heavily used especially in the growing duchy of Unicov. The central areas speak Valeric, but there are mountain duchies and eastern regions that speak Wiakhane, a language with some Dwarven influences. Finally, in the south bordering the Desert of Serpents, most people speak Pahranagati. Of course, there are duchies with mixed populations, and other languages are spoken throughout.
The Old Regime has the two languages that are most similar to Old Common. Humans and halflings along the coasts and islands speak Chevak, and the people of the mountains use the more formal Argaic.
Finally, the Gnomes and the Yuan-ti of Estier adopted Common words and syntax into the languages they speak. Gnomish and Yuan-ti are the trade-tongues of southern Estier (as is Western Orcish, but that isn't related to Common).
