Clidonian

Human Subrace

"A hardy race that founded their people in the wake of the devastation of the Birth of the Dragons, the Clidonians are always at odds with trust and acceptance outside of their own."

About

After the devastation of their homeland, the Clidonians had to adapt or die. Their once tropical area turned tundra and enslavement from the cruel dragons forced their lives to be forever forged in the fire of tribulation. Constantly questioning the motivations of those around them, the Clidonian people are incredibly independent and closed off.   It is through hard work, study, and manipulation of those who would oppress them that has carved the heart of the Clidonian people. They are known to never give up on the task before them and have pushed for innovation out of necessity. Unlike their cousins across the globe, the Clidonians do not put their faith in the gods or the mystical and in later ages even spurn the very use of holy magic.

Origin Story

A once thriving tropical portion of the human nation known as Vozecia, Clidonians had developed a thriving life for themselves between the Strordian mountains and the coast of the Mira Ocean. When the Calling of the Claw brought forth the dragons from the depths of Tenegrim, the cliffs of their land began to split and crumble into the sea.   Their population was decimated with very few cities left standing in the wreckage. With no time to rebuild, they would soon find themselves enslaved and forced to adapt to the growing cold of their new nation under the thumb of their dragon overlords.   They would spend centuries as puppets to their masters, used as soldiers and laborers to establish a kingdom fit for the cold blooded white dragons to rule from. Underneath the oppression, the Clidonians would adapt to their situation through the growth of an underground rebellion and contribute heavily to the end of the Age of the Scale.   Once they earned their hard won freedom, they would turn their attention inwards to building and establish the country of Clidone.

Attributes

As generations have passed and the lack of sunlight and warm days have touched Clidone, their skin tends to be slightly on the lighter side. Their size varies but tends to stay average save for when it comes to their physical strength. Children who survive past their younger years tend to be hardier in stature.   Due to the harsh conditions and generations of conflict, the lifespan of a Clidonian tends to fall on the shorter side. This outlook on a shorter more dangerous life has contributed to their reliance on close community and innovation along with a necessity to weed out weaker portions of their tribe for the survival of their people.

Society

Survival and adaptation is the backbone of Clidonian society. With a constant exception offered to technology, culture, or magics that could help their people, there is no one truth amongst the Clidonians. They are incredibly insular with a thriving slave trade both before and after the desolation of their former overlords.   Politics are less about civil discourse and more about the strongest survives. With a constant revolving door of tribe leaders and presidents, the Clidonians only respect those in charge so long as it keeps them alive and safe.   A decidedly patriarchal society, the Clidonians fell into the thought process of protecting the women or using women as breeders in order to restore their society back when they were initially enslaved by their Draconic overlords. Forced to participate in cross breeding experiments and other heinous acts, the idea of women as property or second class citizens became a natural state of being. This culture carried over due to the high infant death rates and has caused the slave trade to be a necessity to keep them from dying out.

Naming Conventions

Clan names are very common as an identifier of a bloodline and are held by the men in the family. Women and slaves are only granted to use the clan name as an identifier of their head of household. In the more wild areas of Clidone, the names that are given are more out of a recognition of personality and not in a standing tradition.   During the time of the Scale, the slaves had more simple names while the families that earned the Dragonlords favor would have longer and actual family names to bear.
