House Ullman, Ducal Custodians of Baran'tar
House Ullman has held the Ducal seat of Baran'tar since King Manfred retreated from the Battle of Tikret Hill at the end of his eponymous war. The title is currently held by Duke Mattin Ullman, the 8th Duke of Baran'tar.
Family histories report that they were charged with pacifying the newly conquered region to ensure continued Gantrian Rule of the region. As the King's only remaining trusted friend and staunch supporter, Meris Ullman was raised to Duke of Baran'tar following the death of Prince Ferwyn in battle and withdrawal of the King from the battlefield. In the following months and years, strict measures were taken to ensure tranquility within the Duchy. Only during the reign of Queen Maraine I, granddaughter of King Manfred, was the ban on the Baran't religion lifted.
Since then, the House Ullman has continuously held the Ducal seat, longer than any house has held a Duchy. In addition to the Ducal line, other Ullmans have earned noble titles of their own. The first of these was Lamella Ullman, daughter of Duke Merris Ullman, who was raised to Margravine of Dinar'kal, protecting the southern marches of Baran'tar first for her father and later for her brother. In the nearly two hundred years since, House Ullman has further expanded so that fully one in twenty Gantrian Nobles can trace their lineage back to Duke Meris or his siblings.
Duchess Gweneth Ullman (852-912, r. 884-910), a great tactician and war hero, was named Marshal General by King Emon III at the onset of the Goblin War. Her strategic planning was key to the thorough victory against the hated goblins.
The head of the Family is always the holder of the Ducal title, and they are given substantial deference by their extended family members. Every five years, the entirety of House Ullman convenes at one of the Duke's Estates in the Hyrham Mountains for several weeks. Little is known about the goings-on there, and the Duke provides a lavish retreat nearby for servants and attendants while the family is in seclusion.
The culture of House Ullman is sometimes criticized by those who do not fit the mold. Certainly it is not done very loudly or openly, but rumor in high circles suggests that the Duke Mattin holds exceptionally high standards for inheriting and titled Ullmans. At social events that he can't avoid, he is often overheard remarking on the decadence of the bulk of Gantrian nobility while sitting amongst his close allies and friends.
The Duke has four children. His eldest is Lavena, his heir and only daughter. She is expected to Renew the Ducal title within a year or two. His second child is Braeden, who has abandoned the family and gone to study at the Gold Tower. Little is said about Braeden in his father's hearing, though it is believed he still receives money from the Duke. Third is Cedric, whom Mattin generally approves of. Youngest is Irven. Not much is known about Irven, as he is not yet of an age to be presented to the court and begin a "proper Ullman lifestyle."

"Only the strength and will of the Ullmans has kept order among the Baran't. If it was left to these wine-sodden peacocks we'd have an all out war within two years."
