The Sophists

Wisdom or mere loquaciousness?

by Nestor Alren
The Sophists are a group of men who teach rhetoric, philosophy, and in general, the art of persuasion, in the city of Corycus. They are loosely organized, and exercise their profession from whatever pedestal or pulpit they can find in their home city. Over the years, House Hyggion has been rather generous with them, giving them free and practically exclusive reign of the Amphitheater of Corycus. The Sophists are most well known for their rare telling of the myth of Omicron and the Aimana. It is interesting that the Cult of Avernus is located in the same city as the Sophists, and they are rumored to have the very recipe for Aimana. Another connection between the two is the patronage of House Hyggion.

Career

Qualifications

The Sophists have no known education or experience qualifications. To become a Sophist, one must be a man, and must be accepted by the Sophists. This occurs by first participating in their discussions as a student. Once the man has shown themselves to be competitve with the existing Sophists in argument and persuasion, they are accepted as one of them.

Operations

Workplace

The Sophists are able to practice their art anywhere it is not otherwise outlawed. However, they mostly choose to utilize the Amphitheater of Corycus granted to them by the Hyggions.

It should be noted that the amphitheater itself had been disused for some time, since Governor Zagreus Hyggion effectively outlawed artistic performances of music and and theater. After, it became occupied by refugees and the poorest of people, and was in a considerable state of disrepair and decay when the Sophists were officially granted its use. Since then, it has been cleaned up and the most basic and essential repairs performed.

Provided Services

The Sophists spend their time propounding upon the mysteries of the world, and expounding on those things in which they consider themselves knowledgable. They will speak upon virtually any subject, and engage in discussion and argument with anyone. They are mostly patronaged by the Nobility of Corycus, including the daughters of the Governor himself.
