Green Felt Cap

Pride or Privilege?

by Nestor Alren
The green felt cap worn by the men and boys of House Ursanaa is traditionally associated with Central Dyodian Culture. Since before Dyodia's joining wih Nemea, men and boys of Noble lineage in the areas surrounding Greenhaven and the Threshold, have been known to wear this identifying garment.

Manufacturing process

While these caps are more often than not inherited, they do eventually wear out, and new ones must be made. The boys learn to do this themselves, as part of their basic sewing skills. The felt is cut to the pattern and desired size, then sewn together while wrong-side out. Once the thread is tied off, the hat is turned right-side out, and the brim folded up.

Significance

by JC with Canva
Since Dyodia is a matriarchy, the men and boys are subject to female rule - by the Governor, which they refer to as "The Mother," by the women of their families, and the women who lead any other aspect of their lives. Because of this, the wearing of the Dyodian green felt cap signifies that they are under the authority of one of the female leaders in their lives.   The men themselves consider it a point of honor to wear the cap, and share their pride in the same by wearing it no matter where their travels take them. One can presume that the boys are taught this same pride.   But here it should be noted: Only those of Noble heritage wear this cap. No central Dyodian commoner would dare attempt to do so.
