Elven Moonblade

SHADOWBLADE [Moonblade]
Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement by an elf or half-elf)
Of all the magic items created by the elves, one of the most prized and jealously guarded is a moonblade. In ancient times, nearly all elven noble houses claimed one such blade. Over the centuries, some blades have faded from the world, their magic lost as family lines have become extinct. Other blades have vanished with their bearers during great quests. Thus, only a few of these weapons remain.   A moonblade passes down from parent to child. The sword chooses its bearer and remains bonded to that person for life. If the bearer dies, another heir can claim the blade. If no worthy heir exists, the sword lies dormant. It functions like a normal longsword until a worthy soul finds it and lays claim to its power.   A moonblade serves only one master at a time. The attunement process requires a special ritual in the throne room of an elven regent or in a temple dedicated to the elven gods.   A moonblade won't serve anyone it regards as craven, erratic, corrupt, or at odds with preserving and protecting elvenkind. If the blade rejects you, you make ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws with disadvantage for 24 hours. If the blade accepts you, you become attuned to it and a new rune appears on the blade. You remain attuned to the weapon until you die or the weapon is destroyed.   A moonblade typically has one rune on it for each master it had served previously (max 1d6 + 1), however, this blade in particular has none as it became tainted with darkness while in the shadowlands. Instead, this Shadowblade has specific conditions that must be met in order to unlock its potential.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

  1. Lvl 1: The Shadowblade gains the Finesse property
  2. Lvl 5: +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls
  3. Guardian1 (Minor Property) Special Requirements: Consumption of essence of two hundred sapients (does not need to be finishing blow but the target must have been freshly killed within 1 minute)
  4. Lvl 10: +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls
  5. Improved Crit2 Special Requirement: Consumption of the essence of the subject of the wielder's hatred (Nareht)
  6. Lvl 15: +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls
  7. Shadowbringer: this sword functions as a Holy Avenger, except that it deals necrotic damage to celestials and humans. Special Requirement: Consumption of the essence of a powerful shadow creature.

Sentience:
This Shadowblade is an evolved sentient weapon that shares the same alignment as its wielder. It has an Intelligence of 14, a Wisdom of 11, and a Charisma of 15. It also has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet and can sense any shadow presence within a radius of 240 feet.   The Shadowblade communicates by transmitting emotions, sending a tingling sensation through the wielder's hand when it wants to communicate something it has sensed. It can communicate more explicitly, through visions or dreams, when the wielder is either in a trance or asleep.
Personality:
The Shadowblade has two foci. The first was its original purpose which was to advance elvenkind and elven ideas such as courage, loyalty, beauty, music and life. However, because of the taint, the Shadowblade has a insaitable hunger to consume essence from those whom die by its blade

Manufacturing process

The Soulderfjorge is used to create these legendarily rare blades. To own one is a great honor! To be chosen by one has been unheard of for generations.

History

This Moonblade was crafted by a founder, one of the original three Moonknights, whose name was Dalmoira Moonshadow. She was a mighty warrior who used the blade to slay demons and undead and preserve the elven lineage. And because the Moonblade made a pact with her lineage, only her descendants could directly use it. Fast forwarding several centuries to the current timeline, the Moonblade has been sealed away as it was believed that Dalmoira's lineage had completely died out - though this is far from the truth. In fact, Dalmoira's descendants were being targeted over the centuries and so those who survived falsified their deaths and went into hiding. And then after a time, the descendants carefully placed one whom did not know the lineage back into the order in case the need to wield the sword again should arise.

Significance

If one has been chosen by a moonblade, there is a reason.

1 Guardian grants a +2 to initiative while the wielder is conscious
2 The Moonshadow crits on a 19 or a 20 on a d20 attack roll.
