Victor St. Demain
Villain, "Chimes At Midnight"
Victor Maurice St. Demain (b. 980 IR) is a human criminal and former investigating detective from the City of Tallwater whose devotion to scientific technique over magical talent saw him responsible for the apprehension, conviction, and imprisonment of over four hundred criminals and more than a thousand consultations on personal cases over the course of his impressive fifteen-year career.
St. Demain's razor intellect, dry wit, and photogenicity also made him a darling of the print media. Whether indulging his extracurricular passion of mentoring orphans in Goldgate, exchanging bon mots with other celebrated detectives of the city, appearing at society functions, his public image and professional reputation were spotless, and Tallwater loved him for it.
Novelists based characters on him and fictionalized his exploits in Penny Dreadful novels, which in turn became a whole series of flickerglyphs ranging from action adventures to tense murder mysteries, all of which played to packed houses. For more than a decade, domestic productions based on the exploits of Victor St. Demain outsold Imperial exports in the Tallwater market. And as his reputation grew, naturally Victor became independently wealthy. For more than a decade, this was so.
On Wildnight 1019 IR, St. Demain was arrested and charged with crimes surrounding the kidnapping and assault of Judy Castle and the attempted murder of her partner, Henry Castle. After a short but sensational trial which revealed the celebrated detective's deeds and true nature, on 13 Mizento 1020, St. Demain was found not guilty by way of insanity and committed to the Tallwater Sanitarium in Southshore, where he remains as of this writing.
