The Brown House

Hazi Party National Headquarters

The Brown House (Lovásic: Barna Ház [/’bärn ə ’haz/]) is the popular name given to the national headquarters of the New Homeland (Hazi) Party, located at Utka Molnár 47 in Mustrolácz, Közivölgy, Barchu. Situated between Köztér Károly and Köztér Király in the center of Mustrolácz, the property was formerly known as the Kastély Külföldinek (Foreigner's Mansion) after a previous Velandrian owner.

It was purchased in 1915 for the ÚHP and converted from a private residence to the central offices of the Hazi Party. As the party rapidly grew, and its presence in Mustrolácz expanded, the building began to be called "the Brown House" because of the color of the uniforms worn by Hazi Party members who congregated there. Although the vast majority of the party infrastructure has since moved to the capitol, The Brown House remains even today the official headquarters of the ÚHP.

HISTORY

The Hazi party was first organized on 24 Uganmonat 1912 during a meeting held in the Szomjas Kecske Café at Utka Hordógyár 56 in Mustrolácz. The party's first headquarters was in a room above the Café, but within six months they had outgrown the space and moved to a rented office suite around the corner at Utka Kereskedelmi 23. By the following year, the rapidly growing party had once again outgrown its space, and began to search for larger, more permanent quarters.

It was at that time that Mme. Constance d'Ogré, widow of Velandrian wholesale merchant Gorges d'Ogré (1843 - 1913), offered the Kastély Külföldinek property to Papp Dominik, who at the time was treasurer of the ÚHP. Funds for the purchase and renovation of the building were provided by Barchurian industrialist Meggyesfalvi Ödön, an early party supporter.

The impressive neo-classical stone structure was built by noted Barchurian architect Fazekas Hunor in 1810 for aristocrat Pék-Tímár Konrád. After passing through several hands, it was later purchased by Gorges d'Ogré in 1892, and from that point on was known as the Kastély Külföldinek. After its purchase in 1914, it was converted to office space by architect and Hazi party member Venczel Csaba. The new Party Headquarters officially opened on 1 Erzmonat 1915, at which time party officials moved in for the first time.
